{"id":332062,"date":"2024-07-22T15:55:47","date_gmt":"2024-07-22T14:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=332062"},"modified":"2024-07-22T15:55:47","modified_gmt":"2024-07-22T14:55:47","slug":"tinubu-appoints-oladapo-obafunwa-as-new-nimr-dg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/07\/22\/tinubu-appoints-oladapo-obafunwa-as-new-nimr-dg\/","title":{"rendered":"Tinubu appoints Oladapo Obafunwa as new NIMR DG"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>He succeeds Professor Babatunde Salako.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Salako&#8217;s tenure expires on July 23, 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor John Oladapo Obafunwa as the new director-general of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued by his special adviser on media and publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, he said the appointment takes effect on Wednesday, July 24.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Obafunwa succeeds Professor Babatunde Salako, whose tenure expires on Tuesday, July 23.<\/p>\n<p>Ngelale added that President Tinubu expressed gratitude to Professor Salako for his service to the nation.<\/p>\n<p>A renowned expert in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology, Professor Obafunwa brings a wealth of experience and qualifications to the role.<\/p>\n<p>He has worked in various countries, including the UK, USA, and Nigeria, and has held several leadership positions, including former Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University.<\/p>\n<p>The president expects Professor Obafunwa to drive the NIMR\u2019s objective of leading research into diseases of public health importance in Nigeria, developing structures for disseminating research findings, and providing an enabling environment for health research and training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor John Oladapo Obafunwa as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Obafunwa succeeds Professor Babatunde Salako, whose tenure expires on July 23, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe appointment takes effect from July 24, 2024. President Tinubu extends his gratitude to Professor Salako for his service to the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Obafunwa qualified in medicine from the University of Lagos in 1980, following which he specialized in Anatomic Pathology (morphological study of diseases), graduating in May 1987. He later sub-specialized in Forensic Pathology in Scotland (1991) and obtained a law degree from England (2004). He has a number of other academic qualifications and holds membership of various professional bodies in the UK, USA, and Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had worked in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, and the UK before returning to Nigeria in November 2004 to take up an appointment as Professor of Forensic Pathology at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM). He is a former provost of LASUCOM, Chief Medical Examiner for Lagos State, and former Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University. Before his appointment, he was the International Regional Advisor of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK) for Sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has authored several scientific publications and contributed chapters to textbooks. His research spans anatomic and forensic pathology, and he is currently involved in research in forensic entomology and taphonomy at the University of Nebraska, USA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President expects the new Director-General to bring his immense wealth of experience and qualifications to bear in this role to further drive the NIMR\u2019s objective of leading research into diseases of public health importance in Nigeria and developing structures for the dissemination of research findings while providing the enabling environment and facilities for health research and training in cooperation with the federal and state ministries of health\u201d, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>He succeeds Professor Babatunde Salako.
