{"id":332223,"date":"2024-07-23T15:27:28","date_gmt":"2024-07-23T14:27:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=332223"},"modified":"2024-07-23T15:27:28","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T14:27:28","slug":"lagos-taskforce-arrests-40-street-traders-for-causing-traffic-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/07\/23\/lagos-taskforce-arrests-40-street-traders-for-causing-traffic-pollution\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos taskforce arrests 40 street traders for causing traffic, pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Abdulraheem said the suspects broke environmental laws by dumping waste and solids into gutters.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>He urged remaining street traders to move to designated outlets and vacate the streets.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/06\/22\/police-arrest-lagos-taskforce-officers-as-civilian-dies-during-illegal-operation\/\"><strong>Lagos State Taskforce on Environment and Special Offences, Enforcement<\/strong><\/a> Unit has said it arrested 40 persons for allegedly trading on the street at night and causing heavy traffic in Ikeja.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed by the agency\u2019s Spokesperson, Mr Gbadeyan Abdulraheem on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Abdulraheem said that the suspects had been operating illegal night street trading and restaurant at Alade Avenue, Orishe and Johnson Streets, all off Obafemi Awolowo Way in Ikeja.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have converted streets to mini- markets and restaurants, thereby causing serious human\/vehicular traffic obstructions and serious environmental pollution along those routes and adjoining streets,\u201d NAN quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson said that the two-day night raid led by the agency\u2019s Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, was carried out when the traders erected makeshift shops and placed barricades on parts of the road, causing traffic impediments.<\/p>\n<p>Abdulraheem noted that the suspects also flouted the state\u2019s laid down environmental laws through indiscriminate disposal of waste and solid materials into the gutters in the area.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThe raid will be a continuous exercise as a step made in the interest of the citizenry who have longed for solutions to the menace of street trading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of these locations serve as safe haven for suspected criminals and they enjoy the proceeds of their criminal activities there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe flooding experienced in some parts of the state is also as a result of improper disposal of waste that end up clogging the drainage channels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey also sell drugs indiscriminately there, which is counter-productive to the society,\u201d he further said.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson appealed to other recalcitrant street traders and vendors to relocate their stores to designated outlets designed for trading and vacate the streets and inner roads.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Abdulraheem said the suspects broke environmental laws by dumping waste and solids into gutters.
