{"id":333071,"date":"2024-07-30T06:36:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-30T05:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=333071"},"modified":"2024-07-30T06:36:00","modified_gmt":"2024-07-30T05:36:00","slug":"nigerian-bar-association-urges-cancellation-of-planned-protest-calls-for-dialogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/07\/30\/nigerian-bar-association-urges-cancellation-of-planned-protest-calls-for-dialogue\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian Bar Association urges cancellation of planned protest, calls for dialogue"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>He expressed concerns that the protest could be hijacked<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has urged the organizers of the planned #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest to cancel the demonstration and instead engage in dialogue to address the country\u2019s challenges.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released on Monday, NBA President Mr. Yakubu Maikyau (SAN) expressed concerns that the protest could be hijacked by unscrupulous elements, leading to civil unrest and chaos, worsening the current situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI most humbly appeal to Nigerians, particularly those planning to embark on the protest, to reconsider and reflect on the potential consequences for our security, economy, and existence,\u201d Maikyau said. \u201cOur past experiences with mass protests show that they are often hijacked by unscrupulous elements who commit heinous crimes, turning a peaceful protest into a riot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The association recommended organizing a National Security Summit to address security challenges and suggested regular government-people engagement to discuss the country\u2019s issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever we are experiencing now cannot compare to the chaos and destruction that civil unrest could bring. We should not even imagine such an experience, and we must forbid it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Maikyau called on the government, protest organizers, and supporters to cancel the protest and engage in sincere discussions to address the people&#8217;s plight.
