{"id":333700,"date":"2024-08-05T11:20:31","date_gmt":"2024-08-05T10:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=333700"},"modified":"2024-08-05T11:20:31","modified_gmt":"2024-08-05T10:20:31","slug":"oyo-council-chairmen-withdraw-from-algon-over-supreme-court-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/08\/05\/oyo-council-chairmen-withdraw-from-algon-over-supreme-court-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"Oyo council chairmen withdraw from ALGON over supreme court ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Recall that Makinde had set up committees to review Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The 33 council chairmen in Oyo State have made a bold move by withdrawing from the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON).<\/p>\n<p>This decision comes in response to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/07\/11\/breaking-supreme-court-grants-fg-full-financial-autonomy-to-lga\/\"><strong>Supreme Court&#8217;s landmark judgment granting fiscal autonomy to local governments nationwide<\/strong><\/a> on July 11.<\/p>\n<p>In a show of unity, the chairmen issued a communiqu\u00e9 declaring their unwavering support for Governor Seyi Makinde.<\/p>\n<p>This move demonstrates their confidence in the governor&#8217;s leadership and vision for the state.<\/p>\n<p>The state ALGON\u2019s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Akintayo, described the chairmen\u2019s stance as solidarity with Governor Makinde\u2019s recent stand on local government autonomy as ruled by the apex court.<\/p>\n<p>They attributed their loyalty to Makinde for his exemplary leadership and unrivaled achievements since his assumption of office.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that Governor Makinde, during a meeting with some stakeholders after the court ruling, constituted committees to review the apex court\u2019s ruling on local government autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI called this meeting because I felt that even though we have not seen the Certified True Copy of the judgment of the Supreme Court, we have to be proactive and discuss the decision of the Supreme Court as it concerns the financial autonomy of the local government councils because I believe a lacuna has been created between the decision and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that we all swore to uphold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe law is the law, and when there is a conflict, yes, we should go to court. But it behooves us to look for our own home-grown solutions that can ensure we have transparency and that our people do not suffer.
