{"id":334925,"date":"2024-08-14T20:15:54","date_gmt":"2024-08-14T19:15:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=334925"},"modified":"2024-08-14T20:15:54","modified_gmt":"2024-08-14T19:15:54","slug":"who-declares-mpox-a-global-public-health-emergency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/08\/14\/who-declares-mpox-a-global-public-health-emergency\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO declares mpox a global public health emergency"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>The WHO called a meeting of experts to study the outbreak and make a recommendation to the UN health agency\u2019s director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the mpox surge in Africa was now a global public health emergency, sounding its highest possible alarm over the worsening situation.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO called a meeting of experts to study the outbreak and make a recommendation to the UN health agency\u2019s director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, the emergency committee met and advised me that in its view, the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice,\u201d Tedros told a press conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something that should concern us all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWHO is committed in the days and weeks ahead to coordinate the global response, working closely with each of the affected countries, and leveraging our on-the-ground presence, to prevent transmission, treat those infected, and save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision comes after the African Union\u2019s health watchdog declared its own public health emergency over the growing outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>Mpox has swept through the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the virus formerly called monkeypox was first discovered in humans in 1970, and spread to other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Tedros said the more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths reported so far this year in DR Congo has already exceeded last year\u2019s total.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe emergence last year and rapid spread of clade 1b in DRC, which appears to be spreading mainly through sexual networks, and its detection in countries neighbouring DRC is especially concerning, and one of the main reasons for my decision to convene this emergency committee,\u201d he said in opening the emergency committee meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past month, about 90 cases of clade 1b have been reported in four countries neighbouring the DRC that have not reported mpox before: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PHEIC status<\/p>\n<p>A public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) is the highest alarm the WHO can sound.<\/p>\n<p>A PHEIC declaration triggers emergency responses in countries worldwide under the legally binding International Health Regulations.<\/p>\n<p>It is the second PHEIC in succession on mpox \u2014 albeit one focused on a different, and more deadly, strain of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2022, mpox infections surged worldwide, mostly affecting gay and bisexual men, due to the clade 2b subclade.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO declared a public health emergency which lasted from July 2022 to May 2023. The outbreak, which has now largely subsided, caused some 140 deaths out of around 90,000 cases.<\/p>\n<p>The clade 1b subclade, which has been surging in the DRC since September 2023, causes more severe disease than clade 2b, with a higher fatality rate.<\/p>\n<p>Mpox is an infectious disease caused by a virus transmitted to humans by infected animals but can also be passed from human to human through close physical contact.<\/p>\n<p>The disease causes fever, muscular aches and large boil-like skin lesions.<\/p>\n<p>Two vaccines for mpox are recommended by WHO immunisation experts.<\/p>\n<p>A PHEIC has only been declared seven times previously since 2009: over H1N1 swine flu, poliovirus, Ebola, Zika virus, Ebola again, Covid-19 and mpox.<\/p>\n<p>Preparation and resources<br \/>\nMarion Koopmans, director of the Pandemic and Disaster Management Centre at Erasmus University Rotterdam, said a PHEIC \u201craises the level of alert, globally, and may allow WHO to access funds for emergency response\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, \u201cthe same priorities remain: investing in diagnostic capacity, public health response, treatment support and vaccination\u201d, she said, warning that this would be a challenge as the DRC and its neighbours are lacking resources.<\/p>\n<p>And at a global level, \u201cdespite having the resources and basic public health capacity in place, the international outbreak that started in 2022 was not contained\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Red Cross said it was scaling up preparedness measures across Africa, notably in the heavily affected eastern DRC.<\/p>\n<p>The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies voiced \u201cprofound concern\u201d over the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>With its broad network, the IFRC said it was prepared to \u201cplay a crucial role in containing the spread of the disease, even in the hard-to-reach areas where the need is the greatest\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The WHO called a meeting of experts to study the outbreak and make a recommendation to the UN health agency\u2019s director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the mpox surge in Africa was now a global public health emergency, sounding its highest possible alarm over the worsening situation.
