{"id":335220,"date":"2024-08-17T08:05:58","date_gmt":"2024-08-17T07:05:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=335220"},"modified":"2024-08-17T08:05:58","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T07:05:58","slug":"ogun-zhongshan-imbroglio-why-states-shouldnt-enter-international-contracts-alone-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/08\/17\/ogun-zhongshan-imbroglio-why-states-shouldnt-enter-international-contracts-alone-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Ogun\/Zhongshan Imbroglio: Why States Shouldn\u2019t Enter International Contracts Alone \u2013 FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Tuggar stated that federating units shouldn&#8217;t enter into contractual agreements with foreign entities without the knowledge of the ministry of foreign affairs or the Federal Government<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Federal Government has said it is an anomaly for sub-national actors such as states to go into foreign or international negotiations alone.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, made this known on Friday while giving update on the dispute between Ogun state and Chinese company, Zhongshan Fucheng.<\/p>\n<p>Tuggar stated that federating units shouldn&#8217;t enter into contractual agreements with foreign entities without the knowledge of the ministry of foreign affairs or the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the federal government is always the one that bear the brunt and is left to salvage the situation when things go south.<\/p>\n<p>He said moves have begun to resolve the dispute with the Chinese company which has led to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/08\/16\/were-taking-steps-to-recover-3-presidential-jets-seized-in-france-nigerian-govt\/\">seizure of three jets<\/a> of the Federal Government by a French court.<\/p>\n<p>The court ruled that Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment should use Nigeria\u2019s jets at the Paris-Le Bourget and Basel-Mulhouse international airports as \u201csecurity for its claim of EUR 74,459,221\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, the Attorney General and I are working on it both diplomatically and then from legal perspective as well to ensure that this issue is resolved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is part of the problem when sub-national actors like state governments take it upon themselves to go into agreements, go into international arrangements, without recourse to the ministry of foreign affairs, without recourse to the federal government, and then when it goes awry, we are left with the problem to deal with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why it is always important that such arrangements should be registered with the mission there, with the embassy, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and with the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something that Ogun state, under a different administration, not this governor, entered into that we\u2019re not aware of.
