{"id":336743,"date":"2024-08-30T08:35:22","date_gmt":"2024-08-30T07:35:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=336743"},"modified":"2024-08-30T08:35:22","modified_gmt":"2024-08-30T07:35:22","slug":"inflation-youve-30-days-to-crash-prices-of-commodities-fg-tells-traders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/08\/30\/inflation-youve-30-days-to-crash-prices-of-commodities-fg-tells-traders\/","title":{"rendered":"Inflation: You&#8217;ve 30 days to crash prices of commodities, FG tells traders"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>He disclosed that the price control policy was necessitated by the commission&#8217;s discovery of several cases of exorbitant and exploitative prices by Nigerian traders<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Amid galloping inflation and cost of living crisis, traders in the country have been handed a one-month ultimatum to slash the prices of goods.<\/p>\n<p>The order was issued by the Federal Government through Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/08\/12\/fccpc-orders-supermarkets-to-display-product-prices-to-protect-consumers\/\">FCCPC<\/a> vice chairman, Tunji Bello, announced the development during a stakeholders\u2019 meeting on exploitative prices in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He disclosed that the price control policy was necessitated by the commission&#8217;s discovery of several cases of exorbitant and exploitative prices by Nigerian traders.<\/p>\n<p>He said a supermarket in Lagos increased the price of Fruit Blender known as Ninja by 500 percent from N140,000 sold in Texas, United States to N944,999.00 in a supermarket in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Tunji asserted that shady practices, including price fixing and gouging, were detrimental to the stability of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the EVC said the commission will begin enforcement after the September 2024 moratorium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder Section 155, violators, whether individuals or corporate entities, face severe penalties, including substantial fines and imprisonment if found guilty by the court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThis is intended to deter all parties involved in such illicit activities. However, our approach today is not punitive. I, therefore, call on all stakeholders to embrace the spirit of patriotism and cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt is in this spirit that we are giving a moratorium of one month (September) before the commission will start firm enforcement, \u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as traders in the meeting blamed the cost of importation, transportation costs and other variables for the rise in the prices of goods.<\/p>\n<p>According to NAN, the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Traders, FCT Chapter, Ifeanyi Okonkwo, said that charges on imported goods at the Ports also contributed to the hike in prices.<\/p>\n<p>He begged the Commission to set up a task force and involve the association in its enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as Nigerians continue to groan over the rising cost of living as July\u2019s headline and food inflation stood at 33.40 and 39.53 percent, respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>He disclosed that the price control policy was necessitated by the commission&#8217;s discovery of several cases of exorbitant and exploitative prices by Nigerian traders Amid galloping inflation and cost of living crisis, traders in the country have been handed a one-month ultimatum to slash the prices of goods.
