{"id":337110,"date":"2024-09-02T13:51:58","date_gmt":"2024-09-02T12:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=337110"},"modified":"2024-09-02T13:51:58","modified_gmt":"2024-09-02T12:51:58","slug":"court-sends-endbadgovernance-protesters-charged-with-treason-to-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/09\/02\/court-sends-endbadgovernance-protesters-charged-with-treason-to-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"Court sends #EndBadGovernance protesters charged with &#8216;treason&#8217; to prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The protesters were arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>They were accused of treason, mutiny and intent to destabilise Nigeria.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Ten<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/08\/22\/endbadgovernance-protest-2111-protesters-arrested-1403-languishing-in-prison-femi-falana\/\"> #EndBadGovernance protesters<\/a> were on Monday remanded in prison following their arraignment by the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters were arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>They were accused of treason, mutiny and intent to destabilise Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The judge ordered the remand of nine male protesters in the Kuje prison while a female protester was remanded in Suleja.<\/p>\n<p>The court also fixed September 11 for trial and ruling on bail application by the protesters.<\/p>\n<p>The 10 persons who were arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite are Michael Adaramoye also known as Lenin, Adeyemi Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaoluwa Simon, and Angel Innocent.<\/p>\n<p>Others are Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello, Nuradeen Khamis, and Abdulsalam Zubairu.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants, who all pleaded not guilty, were arraigned on six counts of alleged treason, intent to destabilise Nigeria, conspiracy to commit felony and inciting to mutiny which is an offence punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants are equally accused of levying war against the state to intimidate President Bola Tinubu by attacking and injuring police officers and burning police stations, government buildings and private buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty fumes<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the trial of protesters arrested during the nationwide #EndBadGovrnance protests between 1\u201310 August, Isa Sanusi Director Amnesty International Nigeria said, \u201cWe condemn the sham trials even before they began and call for an end to these endless bizarre attempts to deprive people of the right to peaceful protest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The protesters were arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
