{"id":341380,"date":"2024-10-09T18:09:10","date_gmt":"2024-10-09T17:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=341380"},"modified":"2024-10-09T18:09:10","modified_gmt":"2024-10-09T17:09:10","slug":"nigerian-man-remanded-in-south-africa-over-r3-million-romance-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/10\/09\/nigerian-man-remanded-in-south-africa-over-r3-million-romance-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian Man Remanded in South Africa Over R3 Million Romance Scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>Okori\u2019s next court appearance is scheduled for October 14<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A 39-year-old Nigerian national, Gabriel Okori, has been remanded in custody in South Africa for allegedly defrauding a woman of R3 million through an online romance scam.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Okori appeared before the Pretoria Magistrate&#8217;s Court on Monday, October 7, following his arrest last Thursday in Cape Town by the Hawks, South Africa\u2019s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, in collaboration with the City of Cape Town\u2019s law enforcement and a private security firm.<\/p>\n<p>The Hawks&#8217; spokesperson, Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela, said the victim met Okori on Facebook, where he posed as a white man named &#8220;Mark Hermanus.&#8221; They later communicated via WhatsApp, where he claimed his son was seriously ill, persuading the woman to send money for medical expenses.<\/p>\n<p>The victim reportedly transferred over R3 million, believing &#8220;Hermanus&#8221; would repay her once his son\u2019s medical bills were settled.
