{"id":341544,"date":"2024-10-10T17:59:53","date_gmt":"2024-10-10T16:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=341544"},"modified":"2024-10-10T17:59:53","modified_gmt":"2024-10-10T16:59:53","slug":"just-in-revert-petrol-prices-to-june-2023-prices-tuc-tells-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/10\/10\/just-in-revert-petrol-prices-to-june-2023-prices-tuc-tells-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"JUST-IN: Revert petrol prices to June 2023 prices \u2014 TUC tells FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Osifo said the NNPCL should source refined petrol from other places if the Dangote Refinery cannot meet the current daily demands of Nigerians.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Trade Union Congress [TUC] has demanded the federal government to revert petrol prices to June 2023 levels.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2023, petrol prices surged past N500 per litre, far exceeding the subsidized N185 rate under the previous administration.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company [NNPC] Limited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/10\/09\/breaking-again-nnpcl-increases-fuel-pump-price\/\"><strong>increased<\/strong><\/a> petrol prices across its retail outlets.<\/p>\n<p>The price adjustment resulted in petrol selling for N998 per litre in Lagos and N1,003 per litre in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The petrol price hike drew criticism, with the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture [NACCIMA] warning of worsening inflation.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria [PETROAN], the hike stems from difficulties in importing petrol.<\/p>\n<p>At a Thursday press conference in Abuja, Festus Osifo, president of the Nigerian Trade Union Congress [TUC], urged the government to support Dangote Refinery with foreign exchange.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want the price of the product to go below what it was before; not just reverse to what it was before but to go below,\u201d Osifo said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government should specially intervene in the sector by giving foreign exchange to Dangote Refinery at $1\/N1,000 and not at the current $over 1\/N1,600 exchange rate to crash petrol prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe solution we propose will restore June\u2019s prices if implemented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo government leaves its critical sectors to market forces,\u201d and the federal government \u201cshouldn\u2019t leave the oil sector to naira fluctuations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian Trade Union Congress [TUC] president underscored petrol\u2019s vital role, emphasizing affordability and availability for Nigerian households.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want the Federal Government to, through Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority [NMDPRA], grant marketers licenses to lift petrol from Dangote Refinery,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf petrol is unavailable, it\u2019s problematic.
