{"id":342567,"date":"2024-10-19T07:41:06","date_gmt":"2024-10-19T06:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=342567"},"modified":"2024-10-19T07:41:06","modified_gmt":"2024-10-19T06:41:06","slug":"gov-lawal-pardons-31-inmates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/10\/19\/gov-lawal-pardons-31-inmates\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov Lawal pardons 31 inmates"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>Says inmates convicted of various crimes were pardoned to encourage their transformation into law-abiding citizens<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has released 31 inmates who were serving their terms at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Gusau, the state capital.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the governor visited the Gusau Medium Custodial Centre, where he signed to pardon the inmates in accordance with Nigeria\u2019s Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>A statement issued by the governor\u2019s spokesman, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that the decision was made after a careful investigation of the inmates\u2019 records.<\/p>\n<p>The statement added that the constitution allows governors to reduce sentences and pardon inmates.<\/p>\n<p>During his remarks at the event, Governor Lawal said inmates convicted of various crimes were pardoned to encourage their transformation into law-abiding citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, I am exercising the power granted by Section 212(1) of Nigeria\u2019s 1999 Constitution to show mercy to inmates, which aims to alleviate the hardships and psychological distress of imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision was made after thoroughly examining the prisoners\u2019 records, which confirmed their genuine remorse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, I have approved a gift of N50,000 to each pardoned inmate to support their reintegration into society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an effort by my administration to reduce the overcrowding in correctional centers, especially at this time when we are making arrests of suspected bandits and informants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After inspecting the facility, Governor Lawal promised to provide all necessary assistance for the Gusau Correctional Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Umar Galadima, the Comptroller of Corrections, Zamfara Command, praised Governor Lawal for his visit and decision to grant mercy to inmates.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Says inmates convicted of various crimes were pardoned to encourage their transformation into law-abiding citizens The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has released 31 inmates who were serving their terms at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Gusau, the state capital.
