{"id":342750,"date":"2024-10-21T07:22:45","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T06:22:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=342750"},"modified":"2024-10-21T07:22:45","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T06:22:45","slug":"nass-moves-to-reintroduce-5-excise-duty-on-telecom-betting-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/10\/21\/nass-moves-to-reintroduce-5-excise-duty-on-telecom-betting-services\/","title":{"rendered":"NASS moves to reintroduce 5% excise duty on telecom, betting services"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The excisable transaction amount will be based on the service provider\u2019s charge<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The National Assembly has proposed a 5% excise duty on telecommunications, gaming, betting, and lottery activities in the country, despite a previous exemption granted by former President Muhammadu Buhari.<\/p>\n<p>On July 6, 2023, President Bola Tinubu signed four executive orders, one of which suspended the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/08\/01\/pantami-rejects-imposition-of-5-excise-duty-on-telecoms-sector\/\">5 per cent excise tax<\/a> on telecommunication services to mitigate the adverse effects of tax increases on businesses and households.<\/p>\n<p>However, an executive bill titled \u2018Nigeria Tax Bill 2024\u2019 seeks to reintroduce this excise duty.<\/p>\n<p>According to the bill, the excisable transaction amount will be based on the service provider\u2019s charge, whether in monetary terms or equivalent value.<\/p>\n<p>The bill states: \u201cServices, including telecommunications, gaming, gambling, betting, and lotteries, however, described, provided in Nigeria, shall be subject to excise duties at rates specified under the Tenth Schedule to this Act, in a manner prescribed by the Service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the bill includes provisions related to currency exchange transactions involving the naira.
