{"id":343269,"date":"2024-10-25T09:05:43","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T08:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=343269"},"modified":"2024-10-25T09:05:43","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T08:05:43","slug":"nsib-commences-investigation-into-port-harcourt-helicopter-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/10\/25\/nsib-commences-investigation-into-port-harcourt-helicopter-crash\/","title":{"rendered":"NSIB commences investigation into Port Harcourt helicopter crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The search continues with support from neighbouring aerodromes, military units, and low-flying aircraft<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/09\/16\/nigeria-has-best-aviation-safety-record-in-the-globe-nsib\/\">NSIB<\/a>) has begun an investigation into the accident involving a Sikorsky SK76c helicopter registered 5N-BQG and operated by Eastwind Aviation.<\/p>\n<p>The helicopter, which was carrying eight people, six passengers and two crew members, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Bonny Finima, off the coast of Calabar, during a routine flight on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at approximately 11:22 AM local time.<\/p>\n<p>Around 10:52 a.m., the aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers while flying from the Port Harcourt Military Base (DNPM) to the Anton Offshore Facility.<\/p>\n<p>Operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), the helicopter did not transmit an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) signal, prompting authorities to manually plot the accident\u2019s location to expedite search and rescue efforts.<\/p>\n<p>According to the NSIB, Search and rescue operations were activated immediately, with the NSIB collaborating closely with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Nigerian Armed Forces and other relevant agencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmergency response teams are actively working to locate survivors, with three bodies recovered so far. The search continues with support from neighbouring aerodromes, military units, and low-flying aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the sad development, the director general of NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr, declared: \u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this tragic incident. We are fully committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding this accident. We will work diligently to ensure that all necessary information is collected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public must avoid speculation during this sensitive time, as our focus is on providing clarity and accountability through our investigation.
