{"id":343565,"date":"2024-10-28T15:10:09","date_gmt":"2024-10-28T14:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=343565"},"modified":"2024-10-28T15:10:09","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T14:10:09","slug":"fg-moves-to-boost-food-production-to-tame-inflation-edun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/10\/28\/fg-moves-to-boost-food-production-to-tame-inflation-edun\/","title":{"rendered":"FG moves to boost food production to tame inflation \u2014 Edun"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Federal Government to farm about 1 million hectares in November for planting wheat, as well as, in January and February when they would plant rice<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In order to combat inflation and ensure food security, the federal government is stepping up efforts to increase food production in the country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/04\/22\/fg-to-get-fresh-2-2bn-world-bank-loan-edun\/\">Mr. Wale Edun<\/a>, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, stated during the Nigerian delegation&#8217;s wrap-up press briefing at the 2024 IMF\/World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington DC on Sunday that the government is focussing on collecting the wet season harvest and identifying small-scale farmers to ensure a good dry season harvest.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed Manga, Director of Information and Public Relations, said in a statement late Sunday night that the Minister stated that efforts are being intensified to increase food production in the country and that with better harvests, the inflation rate would fall.<\/p>\n<p>In his words, \u201cOne of the key things that we are focusing on at this particular time is ensuring that we dutifully collect the wet season harvest, which is underway at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, we have diligently identified the small-scale farmers to ensure we have a good dry season harvest, which will lead to increased outs of food, increased availability and increased affordability,\u201d Edun said.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasised that \u201cWe need to remember that food represents 50 percent of the Consumer Price index.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, success in this area will help to drive down inflation in addition to all the other measures that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, using data, using evidence-based information to fight inflation is implementing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you put all that together, it will go well to fight the rate of inflation, which will automatically line things up, as we have seen from the examples of advanced countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Edun informed that 600, 000 farmers were being assisted by the Federal Government to farm about 1 million hectares in November for planting wheat, as well as, in January and February when they would plant rice.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, the the Senate Inter-Parliamentary Committee Chairman, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim advocated the need for the Federal Government to issue poor Nigerians with Food Vouchers, as a means of tackling hunger in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>He observed that Food Vouchers would be more effective in addressing the food supply challenges of poor Nigerians than the current Cash Transfers initiative of the present administration.<\/p>\n<p>With these efforts in place, Nigeria is poised to overcome its economic challenges and ensure food security for its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s commitment to supporting farmers will go a long way in driving down inflation and promoting economic growth.
