{"id":344444,"date":"2024-11-05T11:25:28","date_gmt":"2024-11-05T10:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=344444"},"modified":"2024-11-05T11:25:28","modified_gmt":"2024-11-05T10:25:28","slug":"breaking-court-dismisses-treason-charges-against-endbadgovernance-protesters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/11\/05\/breaking-court-dismisses-treason-charges-against-endbadgovernance-protesters\/","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Court dismisses treason charges against #EndBadGovernance protesters"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>Recall that President Tinubu had\u00a0 directed the AGF to terminate the charges against the accused persons, most of who are said to be minors and prohibited by law from facing such trial<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the treason charges brought against the #EndBadGovernance# protesters by the Inspector General of Police.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Obiora Egwuatu dismissed the charge on Tuesday after the withdrawal of the charges by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, on behalf of the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>The Director of Public Prosecution, Mohammed Abubakar, had at the proceedings announced his exercise of Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution to take over the case from the Inspector General of Police.<\/p>\n<p>Upon the grant of the request by Justice Egwuatu, the AGF proceeded to request for invocation of the same section of the Constitution to discontinue the trial of the 150 accused persons.<\/p>\n<p>Following no objections to the request from various lawyers representing the accused persons, Justice Egwuatu granted the request and struck out the charges.<\/p>\n<p>Although, the accused persons were not in court, the Judge ordered their immediate release from prison remand.<\/p>\n<p>President Bola Tinubu had on Monday directed the AGF to terminate the charges against the accused persons, most of who are said to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/11\/05\/endbadgovernance-igp-directs-investigation-into-alleged-mistreatment-of-minors-while-in-detention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minors<\/a> and prohibited by law from facing such trial.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recall that President Tinubu had\u00a0 directed the AGF to terminate the charges against the accused persons, most of who are said to be minors and prohibited by law from facing such trial The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the treason charges brought against the #EndBadGovernance# protesters by the Inspector General of Police.
