{"id":344668,"date":"2024-11-07T16:13:46","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T15:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=344668"},"modified":"2024-11-07T16:13:46","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T15:13:46","slug":"cng-vehicle-safety-presidency-speaks-amid-malaysias-phase-out-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/11\/07\/cng-vehicle-safety-presidency-speaks-amid-malaysias-phase-out-plans\/","title":{"rendered":"CNG vehicle safety: Presidency speaks amid Malaysia\u2019s phase-out plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>Recall that the Malaysia government had announced several measures aimed at phasing out the use of CNG for vehicles and CNG-powered vehicles, citing safety concerns<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Presidency on Thursday reacted to the phasing out of the use of CNG for vehicles and CNG-powered vehicles in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>Even as it allayed the fear of citizens on the use of gas in vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA had earlier reported that Malaysia\u2019s transport minister, Loke Siew Fook, announced several measures aimed at phasing out the use of CNG for vehicles and CNG-powered vehicles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/11\/07\/malaysia-moves-to-phase-out-cng-vehicles-over-safety-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">citing safety concerns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Loke said CNG (NGV in Malaysia)-powered vehicles can no longer be registered to be used in Malaysia from July 1, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>He said this was for the safety of road users and the public, adding that there were only about 44,383 CNG vehicles currently, accounting for just 0.2% of vehicles, not including motorcycles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NGV tanks of these vehicles are now reaching the end of their service life and need to be replaced, and NGV tanks typically have a safe usage period of 15 years,\u201d Fook said.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the development, Onanuga clarified that Malaysia\u2019s policy was centered on the safety of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), rather than CNG.<\/p>\n<p>Onanuga also pointed out that Malaysia\u2019s shift away from petrol and diesel had been largely ineffective, with just 0.2% of vehicles converted over 15 years, while Nigeria\u2019s advancements in tank manufacturing capacity set it apart as a key game-changer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome clarification on Malaysia\u2019s plan to phase out CNG-powered vehicles,\u201d Onanuga said in a post on X on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Malaysian issue relates to the safety of LPG, NOT CNG. In the original report, Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated, \u2018There are also some car owners who have modified their vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, which are very dangerous.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNGV covers both CNG and LPG. Nigeria, in its transition, has adopted CNG ONLY, not both, due to valid safety and cost concerns regarding LPG.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalaysia\u2019s programme for CNG-powered vehicles struggled, achieving only a 0.2% conversion rate over 15 years.
