{"id":345298,"date":"2024-11-13T06:48:47","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T05:48:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=345298"},"modified":"2024-11-13T06:48:47","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T05:48:47","slug":"nnpc-ends-importation-of-refined-petroleum-products-kyari","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/11\/13\/nnpc-ends-importation-of-refined-petroleum-products-kyari\/","title":{"rendered":"NNPC Ends Importation of Refined Petroleum Products \u2013 Kyari"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"marker:text-textOff list-disc pl-8\">\n<li><strong>NNPC has officially stopped importing refined petroleum products, now sourcing fuel solely from local refineries, including the Dangote Refinery<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CEO Mele Kyari emphasizes the strategic shift to domestic refining, aiming to reduce reliance on imports and stabilize Nigeria&#8217;s economy<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>According to its Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mele Kyari, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has officially ceased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/08\/30\/fuel-importation-will-end-by-2023-nnpc-boss\/\">importing refined petroleum products. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the 42nd Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) annual conference in Lagos, Kyari announced that NNPC now sources fuel solely from local refineries, including the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, NNPC does not import any product; we only take it from domestic refineries.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing rumours that NNPC obstructs refining efforts at Dangote Refinery, he said, \u201cThe point is very far from it, and I\u2019m going to speak to it straight. We are very proud part-owners of Dangote refinery, no doubt about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw an opportunity that there is a clear market for at least 300,000 barrels of our production; we know that as time moves on, people will start struggling to find markets for their production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will happen; it\u2019s already happening. As you know, oil is found in many unexpected locations worldwide and people have choices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, we saw an opportunity to log supply to the domestic refinery, not just Dangote but any other refinery that operates in the country, so it was a very informed business decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, from day one, we knew that it is to our benefit to supply crude oil to the domestic refinery, so we don\u2019t need to be persuaded; we don\u2019t need anyone to talk to us, there is no need for any pressure from the streets for us to do this. We are already doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also addressed the call for Nigeria to domesticate its oil, saying Nigerian crude is \u201cLamborghini crude,\u201d so the products would be pricey. He added that the issue of high-quality fuel is relative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should never forget that Nigerian crude is \u2019Lamborghini crude\u2019, if we choose that every product we have in this country must come from domestic production, then we must deal with pricing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOtherwise, out there in the global market, everybody buys Nigerian crude and blends it with dirtier crude to process, a lot of you will confirm this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, no one takes Nigerian crude except one or two I know refineries. Straight processing of Nigerian crude, nobody does this, because you do have a gap in value if you do this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, as a country, and I believe this strongly also, that we must process all the crude that we produce to the optimum. You can do intermediate products and sell to the market, you are still adding value. You don\u2019t have to sell gasoline that is coming from Nigerian production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can do something different to process it domestically, but it\u2019s going to be high quality. As we all know and it\u2019s very clear in the media that we are selling high-quality products, that\u2019s very true but you need not do this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are driving a Keke-Napep and you want Lamborghini fuel, you do not need it. So, the quality issue is a relative thing, it\u2019s by geography, by location, and we will do everything possible to make sure that we domesticate this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kyari also denied claims that the company did not want to sell crude to Dangote in naira in attempt to sabotage the refinery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are too many claimants out there, that the NNPC does not want to sell crude to the refinery in naira as a form of sabotage. Far from it!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes no difference to us because if you sell crude to the domestic refinery in naira and you buy the product from the domestic refinery, it\u2019s a net zero gain. You lose nothing, you probably gain nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOtherwise, whatever you do, you still have to source foreign exchange to import if you have to import.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, if you stop the import and sell in naira, you are simply doing a substitution. It\u2019s a settlement platform and we must commend the President for bringing this initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat it will do to our country is that the biggest source of FX pressure is the import of PMS. It\u2019s the highest value.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means if you can take that under control, it means that speculation around the naira to the extent of those FX that is required for domestic product supply will be eliminated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means speculation will go, you would have controlled inflation, and you would have controlled the FX pressure because we would have settled the exchange rate for 50 percent of your imports.
