{"id":348725,"date":"2024-12-10T07:22:33","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T06:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=348725"},"modified":"2024-12-10T07:26:39","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T06:26:39","slug":"well-punish-those-filing-frivolous-petition-against-judges-cjn-kekere-ekun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/12\/10\/well-punish-those-filing-frivolous-petition-against-judges-cjn-kekere-ekun\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;ll punish those filing frivolous petitions against judges \u2013 CJN Kekere-Ekun"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Justice Kekere-Ekun said the NJC would look into genuine complaints against judicial officers while at the same time it has to support judges where frivolous applications are made<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Nigerian judiciary has voiced its displeasure at the filing of inconsequential applications and petitions against judicial officers, especially judges, in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/11\/25\/edwin-clark-criticizes-buharis-removal-of-onnoghen-applauds-cjn-kekere-ekun\/\">Kekere-Ekun<\/a>, who shared this concern disclosed that the National Judicial Council (NJC) is exploring ways to punish those behind the frivolous petitions.<\/p>\n<p>She made the disclosure at the opening of the Court of Appeal\u2019s Justices\u2019 Annual Conference with the theme: \u201cJudicial Introspection\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justice Kekere-Ekun said the NJC act on genuine complaints against judicial officers while at the same time it has to support and protect judges where frivolous applications are made.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the event at court complex on Monday in Abuja, the CJN reiterated the council\u2019s determination to change the negative perception of the judiciary in the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudicial education plays a key role in this process. Increasingly, judicial training incorporates social context awareness initiatives that emphasise understanding the diverse backgrounds, cultural, economic and otherwise of those who come before our courts. These programmes ensure that we deliver justice, not only impartially, but also equitably,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She advised heads of courts and divisions to hold regular conferences as a way of avoiding conflicting decisions and to properly examine judgements from trial courts and reasons for judgements.<\/p>\n<p>In her welcome address, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, stressed the importance of training justices in the digital age, including the management of online reputation, cyber-bullying and harassment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the deployment of AI in judicial contexts also raises profound questions regarding bias, transparency, and accountability.
