{"id":348736,"date":"2024-12-10T07:44:05","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T06:44:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=348736"},"modified":"2024-12-10T07:44:05","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T06:44:05","slug":"parents-demanding-palliatives-before-releasing-children-for-vaccination-kwara-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/12\/10\/parents-demanding-palliatives-before-releasing-children-for-vaccination-kwara-govt\/","title":{"rendered":"Parents demanding \u201cpalliatives\u201d before releasing children for vaccination \u2013 Kwara govt"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr Oguntoye warned that unvaccinated children risk re-infecting others, potentially spreading life-threatening diseases<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/10\/01\/gunmen-abduct-pastor-engineer-in-kwara-state\/\">Kwara State<\/a> government has lamented the refusal of parents to release their children for participation in routine immunisation.<\/p>\n<p>The state government expressed concern over the parents&#8217; disturbing attitude towards the immunisation campaigns for children aged 0 to 59 months, saying it portends danger for children in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Michael Oguntoye, Director of the Primary Healthcare System, disclosed the troubling trend during a stakeholders\u2019 meeting on integrated health campaigns across all 16 local government areas in the state.<\/p>\n<p>According to Oguntoye, the parents are demanding for \u201cpalliatives\u201d as a prerequisite for allowing their children to be vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>During the ongoing Routine Immunisation Vaccine Catch-Up exercise, the government announced a targeted focus on three local government areas\u2014Ilorin East, Ifelodun, and Baruten\u2014which previously recorded suboptimal performance in immunisation coverage.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that these areas had a significant number of unvaccinated children, partly due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Oguntoye warned that unvaccinated children risk re-infecting others, potentially spreading life-threatening diseases.<\/p>\n<p>He also noted that resistance from some parents, particularly fathers, remains a challenge for effective immunisation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome parents even demand palliatives or incentives before allowing their children to be vaccinated,\u201d he said, reminding them that while vaccines are offered free of charge, each dose costs the federal government approximately N70,000.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasised that immunisation is globally recognised as one of the most effective public health interventions, preventing about 60% of diseases and reducing healthcare costs for families.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Oguntoye warned that unvaccinated children risk re-infecting others, potentially spreading life-threatening diseases The Kwara State government has lamented the refusal of parents to release their children for participation in routine immunisation.
