{"id":349621,"date":"2024-12-18T12:09:32","date_gmt":"2024-12-18T11:09:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=349621"},"modified":"2024-12-18T12:09:32","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T11:09:32","slug":"why-i-sacked-managing-director-of-ibom-power-governor-eno","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/12\/18\/why-i-sacked-managing-director-of-ibom-power-governor-eno\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I sacked Managing Director of Ibom power \u2013 Governor Eno"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Recall that Etukudoh was sacked about a month ago, a move that drew the ire of the public and sparked backlash from the citizens.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Governor Umo Eno of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/12\/16\/workers-must-be-verified-before-implementing-%e2%82%a680000-minimum-wage-akwa-ibom-governor\/\">Akwa Ibom<\/a> State has opened up on the sudden dismissal of the former Managing Director of the state-owned power company, Ibom Power Company, Engr Meyen Etukudoh.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that Etukudoh was sacked about a month ago, a move that drew the ire of the public and sparked backlash from the citizens.<\/p>\n<p>The governor, who has largely remained silent about the development, broke his silence on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Day-2 of the ongoing Inter Ministerial Briefings\/End of Year Review in Uyo, said it was imperative to relieve Etukudoh of his duty in order to restore sanity and development in the power sector.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the embattled MD following a four-day blackout in the state announced in a press statement that the situation was due to the failure of Acugas, (the gas supplier) to supply gas to the plant with the claims that the state was owing it.<\/p>\n<p>Few hours later, another statement emanated from the Secretary to Akwa Ibom State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, announcing the immediate sack of the Ibom Power MD without stating any reason.<\/p>\n<p>However, it was widely believed that Etukudoh\u2019s ordeal was not unconnected to the press statement which was assumed to humiliate the state government.<\/p>\n<p>Lending credence to public position on the matter, governor Eno speaking at the banquet hall said public servants have no right to issue a press statement without getting clearance from the right authority.<\/p>\n<p>He wondered why the embattled MD failed to deploy diplomacy in dealing with Acugas considering the fact that the state owed the company N40 billion, rather he chose the pact of issuing unauthorized press statements alleging Acugas abruptly cut off gas supply.<\/p>\n<p>Eno, who described the statement as inciting, said if Akwa Ibom youths were not clearheaded, rational and tactful, they could have burnt down Acugas facility without knowing the crux of the matter and lauded the youths for their peaceful disposition.<\/p>\n<p>His words, \u201cThere are things I don\u2019t want to say here because I don\u2019t want to be misquoted but I can tell you as a sitting governor for 18 months, the only time I got a brief from Ibom power was when the Honourable Commissioner for power took over the place (Ibom Power). Such a critical asset?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though I visited the place, nobody made any effort to reach out to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo when we took decisions we took and people complained, in any case it is a government appointed job and you can\u2019t be there forever, there are other people that will come and go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a tenured job and the day my tenure ends, I\u2019m gone. The pressure that was mounted was not necessary and as public servants, we all know that you can\u2019t issue a press statement without clearance from the right authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes people abuse simplicity. They believe that the governor is very simple, he can sit on the floor and play with everybody then we take advantage of that and cross the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are owing the gas company N40 billion, that is 7.9 million dollars you are owing them and you come out to make a press statement that they have cut off power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssuming we have youths that are irrational, that company would have been burnt down by now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are owning somebody and still shouting, the right thing to do would have been to beg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe greatest pain of this was an MD going on leave and handing over everything to a contractor and even putting it in writing for him to be in charge of the plant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know where that is done.
