{"id":349858,"date":"2024-12-20T17:34:36","date_gmt":"2024-12-20T16:34:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=349858"},"modified":"2024-12-20T17:34:36","modified_gmt":"2024-12-20T16:34:36","slug":"nlc-asks-edo-governor-igp-to-address-secretariat-invasion-property-seizure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/12\/20\/nlc-asks-edo-governor-igp-to-address-secretariat-invasion-property-seizure\/","title":{"rendered":"NLC asks Edo governor, IGP to address secretariat &#8216;invasion, property seizure&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>In the petition dated December 19, 2024, the NLC expressed its concerns.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>The NLC emphasized its readiness to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure the rights of workers and trade unions are respected.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has petitioned Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/11\/12\/igp-officers-on-illegal-duty-found-guarding-foreign-cybercriminals\/\"><strong>Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This complaint is regarding the alleged takeover of its Edo State secretariat and seizure of its assets.<\/p>\n<p>In separate letters to the governor and IGP, the NLC&#8217;s General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, informed them about a communiqu\u00e9 from the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on December 18, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The communiqu\u00e9 gave the police until January 8, 2025, to leave the premises and return all seized assets to avoid a clash with organized labour.<\/p>\n<p>The letters urged the &#8220;prompt intervention&#8221; of both officials to resolve the issue.<\/p>\n<p>In the petition dated December 19, 2024, the NLC expressed concerns, stating: &#8220;The communiqu\u00e9 highlights key resolutions, including concerns regarding the invasion and ransacking of the NLC Edo State Council Secretariat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis unfortunate incident, reportedly carried out under the auspices of your administration, undermines the principles of democracy and the protection of trade union rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdo State, with its rich history of producing past trade union leaders and governors supportive of workers\u2019 rights, cannot afford to tarnish this legacy with actions contrary to established rules of engagement as social partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge Your Excellency to take immediate steps to vacate the secretariat premises, restore all confiscated properties, and ensure non-interference in the affairs of the Congress. The NLC remains committed to working collaboratively with your administration to address matters of mutual concern and safeguard the rights and welfare of workers in Edo State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the NLC addressed a letter to IGP Egbetokun, highlighting the NEC resolutions:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe resolutions addressed critical national concerns, including the invasion and ransacking of the NLC Edo State Council Secretariat. Recall our earlier letter to you on this issue and the current resolution of the NEC, as contained in the communiqu\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis act, reportedly carried out with the involvement of the police, raises serious questions about the protection of trade union rights as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe request your immediate attention to ensure the safety of our members, restitution of confiscated properties, and a commitment to refraining from further interference in trade union activities.
