{"id":349868,"date":"2024-12-20T18:30:25","date_gmt":"2024-12-20T17:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=349868"},"modified":"2024-12-20T18:30:25","modified_gmt":"2024-12-20T17:30:25","slug":"activist-charged-with-cyberbullying-for-cursing-tinubus-son-others-bail-application-denied","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/12\/20\/activist-charged-with-cyberbullying-for-cursing-tinubus-son-others-bail-application-denied\/","title":{"rendered":"Activist charged with cyberbullying for cursing Tinubu\u2019s son, others bail application denied"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The trial judge adjourned the matter till 30 December for commencement of trial.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A Federal High Court in Abuja has denied bail to Olamide Thomas, a nurse and activist.<\/p>\n<p>The trial judge, Emeka Nwike, adjourned the case until December 30 for the commencement of the trial.<\/p>\n<p>Olamide Thomas was detained for making derogatory remarks on social media against Seyi, son of President Bola Tinubu, and others.<\/p>\n<p>Her lawyers requested bail orally, but the judge rejected it, asking for a formal application instead.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas pleaded guilty to three counts of cyberbullying but was remanded in Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State.<\/p>\n<p>She was arrested in Lagos on December 13 for allegedly cursing Seyi Tinubu and the children of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Police Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas live-streamed the video on her Facebook page on October 20, after she was reportedly brutalized by police officers during the #EndSARS memorial procession at the Lekki Tollgate.<\/p>\n<p>The police flew her to Abuja for further interrogation and prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>One of the charges alleged that Thomas made remarks in Yoruba, placing curses on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/12\/15\/seyi-tinubu-donates-e-library-and-co-working-space-to-young-lawmakers\/\"><strong>Seyi Tinubu<\/strong><\/a> and wishing him death.<\/p>\n<p>The charge stated that these comments were made &#8220;with intent to bully, threaten, and harass the person of Mr Seyi Tinubu,&#8221; adding that &#8220;such communication places the said Mr Seyi Tinubu in fear of death, violence, or bodily harm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The second count accused her of bullying and threatening Mr Egbetokun, causing him to fear death or violence.<\/p>\n<p>The third count alleged that she made curses directed at Mr Adejobi, claiming his children would die before his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution said each count was contrary to and punishable under section 24 (2) (a) Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc, Amendment) Act, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>However, Ms Thomas pleaded not guilty to all three counts.<\/p>\n<p>The defendant was brought to court from the Muhammadu Buhari Police Hospital, where she was receiving medical treatment after slumping in police custody.<\/p>\n<p>The defence lawyers agreed to file a formal bail application before the court assigns a date for hearing it.<\/p>\n<p>The #EndSARS memorial procession was held on October 20 to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS protest.<\/p>\n<p>Police reportedly arrested 23 activists who gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate, dispersing the crowd with teargas.<\/p>\n<p>The date marks the tragic events of October 20, 2020, when security forces opened fire on peaceful protesters, injuring or killing many.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, October 20 has been observed to honour the victims and reflect on the struggle against police brutality and systemic governance issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The trial judge adjourned the matter till 30 December for commencement of trial.
