{"id":35070,"date":"2021-05-18T13:34:33","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T12:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=35070"},"modified":"2021-05-18T13:34:33","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T12:34:33","slug":"governor-abiodun-suspends-aide-arrested-in-the-us-for-350k-unemployment-benefit-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/18\/governor-abiodun-suspends-aide-arrested-in-the-us-for-350k-unemployment-benefit-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor Abiodun suspends aide arrested in the US for $350k unemployment benefit fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the arrest of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/18\/governor-abioduns-aide-abidemi-rufai-arrested-in-us-over-covid-19-unemployment-benefit-fraud\/\"><strong>Abidemi Rufai<\/strong><\/a>, Ogun state Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Special Duties, by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in New York, over his alleged involvement in $350,000 unemployment benefits fraud, the Ogun state governor, Dapo Abiodun, has taken drastic action by suspending him.<\/p>\n<p>The United States Department of Justice on Monday, May 17, announced Rufai&#8217;s arrest.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, Governor Abiodun said the news of his aide\u2019s involvement in fraud is disturbing.<\/p>\n<p>The statement in part reads;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe received the very disturbing news of the arrest of one of the governor\u2019s political appointees, Mr Abidemi Rufai in New York over alleged unemployment benefits and fraud in the United States, this morning.<\/p>\n<p>While the Governor cannot be held responsible for the actions of a full grown adult, especially outside the jurisdiction of Ogun and Nigeria, he has since suspended the suspect from office to enable him answer the charges levelled against him.<\/p>\n<p>The Governor wishes to condemn any act capable of undermining his determination to institute an open, transparent, accountable and morally upright behaviour in the State and in governance.<\/p>\n<p>Gov.
