{"id":350735,"date":"2024-12-29T08:55:15","date_gmt":"2024-12-29T07:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=350735"},"modified":"2024-12-29T08:55:15","modified_gmt":"2024-12-29T07:55:15","slug":"south-korea-plane-crash-96-passengers-confirmed-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/12\/29\/south-korea-plane-crash-96-passengers-confirmed-dead\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korea plane crash: 96 passengers confirmed dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Authorities in the Asia country have attributed the likely cause of the crash to collision with birds and adverse weather conditions<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>At least ninety six people have now been confirmed dead in the plane crash that happened on Sunday in South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Within Nigeria had earlier reported that a Jeju Air jetliner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/12\/29\/plane-with-181-passengers-onboard-crashes-in-south-korea\/\">crashed while landing<\/a> at an international airport in South Korea city of Muan which is about 288 kilometres (179 miles) southwest of Seoul.<\/p>\n<p>The plane, which had onboard 175 passengers and six crew, rammed into a barrier and bursting into flames after veering off the runway.<\/p>\n<p>Only two survivors have been rescued so far and 96 confirmed dead.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities in the Asia country have attributed the likely cause of the crash to collision with birds and adverse weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers were reportedly flung out of the plane and left it \u201calmost completely destroyed\u201d, according to fire officials.<\/p>\n<p>Video showed the Jeju Air plane landing on its belly without wheels at Muan International Airport, skidding off the runway as smoke waft out from the engines, before crashing into a wall and exploding in flames.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPassengers were ejected from the aircraft after it collided with the barrier, leaving little chance of survival,\u201d a local fire official told families at a briefing, according to a statement released by the fire brigade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plane is almost completely destroyed, and identifying the deceased is proving difficult. The process is taking time as we locate and recover the remains,\u201d he was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far, two people rescued \u2014 both are flight attendants \u2014 96 dead,\u201d the fire department said, revising an earlier statement that said one of the survivors was a passenger.<\/p>\n<p>A photo showed the tail section of the plane \u2014 a Boeing 737-8AS according to Flight Radar \u2014 engulfed in flames on what appeared to be the side of the runway, with firefighters and emergency vehicles nearby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cause of the accident is presumed to be a bird strike combined with adverse weather conditions. However, the exact cause will be announced following a joint investigation,\u201d Lee Jeong-hyun, chief of Muan fire station, said during a briefing.<\/p>\n<p>A response team officer at the local fire department, Lee Hyeon-ji said rescue authorities had evacuated passengers from the rear section of the jet.<\/p>\n<p>The fire agency said it had mobilised 32 fire engines and scores of fire fighters to the scene.<\/p>\n<p>The accident took place at 9:03 am (0003 GMT) on Sunday during the landing of Jeju Air Flight 2216, the Ministry of Land said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA total of 175 passengers \u2014 including two Thai nationals \u2014 and six crew members were onboard,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The initial fire was extinguished and a search and rescue operation was \u201cunder way at the crash site\u201d, it said in a statement at around 11:00 am local time.<\/p>\n<p>Low-cost carrier Jeju Air apologised and vowed to do all it could to help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe at Jeju Air will do everything in our power in response to this accident. We sincerely apologise for causing concern,\u201d the airline said in a statement posted on its social media channels.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Engulfed in flames \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Acting President Choi Sang-mok called for the mobilisation of all resources to save the passengers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll related agencies\u2026 must mobilise all available resources to save the personnel,\u201d he instructed officials in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Choi convened an emergency meeting with cabinet members to discuss rescue operations and response before heading to Muan, his office said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe no words of consolation would suffice for the bereaved families who have suffered this tragedy,\u201d said Choi, who took office only on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entire government is working closely together to manage the aftermath of the accident, dedicating all available resources, while making every effort to ensure thorough support for the bereaved families,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first fatal accident in the history of Jeju Air, one of South Korea\u2019s largest low-cost carriers, which was set up in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>On August 12, 2007, a Bombardier Q400 operated by Jeju Air carrying 74 passengers came off the runway due to strong winds at the southern Busan-Gimhae airport, resulting in a dozen injuries.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea\u2019s aviation industry has a solid track record for safety, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, a passenger opened an emergency exit on an Asiana Airlines flight as it was preparing to land, with the aircraft landing safely but several people hospitalised.<\/p>\n<p>A number of fatal aviation accidents have occurred globally due to bird strikes, which can cause a loss of power if the animals are sucked into the air intakes.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, a United States Airways Airbus A320 famously landed in New York\u2019s Hudson River after bird strikes on both of its engines, in an incident widely known as the \u201cMiracle on the Hudson\u201d because there was no loss of life.<\/p>\n<p>AFP<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Authorities in the Asia country have attributed the likely cause of the crash to collision with birds and adverse weather conditions At least ninety six people have now been confirmed dead in the plane crash that happened on Sunday in South Korea.
