They refused. I offered them equity participation, but they still said no,\u201d Obasanjo said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that Shell\u2019s decision was based on several factors, including their preference for profits from upstream operations, the small size of Nigeria\u2019s refineries, poor maintenance, and widespread corruption in refinery activities.<\/p>\n<p>According to Obasanjo, Dangote\u2019s involvement presented a viable alternative, but Yar\u2019Adua\u2019s administration reversed the decision. \u201cAliko got a team together, paid $750 million, and was ready to manage the refineries. But my successor refunded the money.<\/p>\n<p>He said NNPC assured him they could handle it when I asked why. I told him they couldn\u2019t, and they still haven\u2019t,\u201d Obasanjo said.<\/p>\n<p>He further claimed that over $2 billion has been spent on the refineries since the reversal with no tangible results.<\/p>\n<p>Obasanjo highlighted the contrast between government inefficiency and Dangote\u2019s private sector success. He expressed confidence in Dangote\u2019s ability to make his privately-owned refinery operational and profitable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAliko will make his refinery work and deliver.
