{"id":35182,"date":"2021-05-18T18:54:38","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T17:54:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=35182"},"modified":"2021-05-18T18:54:38","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T17:54:38","slug":"nafdac-approves-johnson-johnson-covid-vaccine-for-emergency-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/18\/nafdac-approves-johnson-johnson-covid-vaccine-for-emergency-use\/","title":{"rendered":"NAFDAC approves Johnson &amp; Johnson COVID vaccine for emergency use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has approved the use of Johnson &amp; Johnson (J&amp;J) COVID-19 vaccine in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>This approval was announced on Tuesday by the director-general of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye.<\/p>\n<p>According to the NAFDAC DG,\u00a0the vaccine is for emergency use.<\/p>\n<p>The approval brings to three the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/30\/nafdac-approves-use-of-pfizer-covid-19-vaccine-for-emergency-use-only\/\">COVID-19 vaccines<\/a> approved for use in Nigeria by the agency \u2014 after AstraZeneca and Pfizer were authorised in February and April respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Adeyeye said the agency made a thorough evaluation of the J&amp;J vaccine and concluded that the data on the vaccine was robust and met the criteria for efficacy, safety and quality.<\/p>\n<p>She said the benefits of the vaccine outweigh its known risks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResults from a clinical trial involving people in the United States, South Africa and Latin American countries found that Janssen COVID-19 vaccine is effective for 18 years of age and above,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Phase III clinical trial involved over 44,000 people. Half received a single dose of the vaccine and half were given placebo (a dummy injection).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NAFDAC DG said the trial found a 67 percent reduction in the number of symptomatic COVID cases after two weeks in people who received J&amp;J COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>She said the vaccine will be monitored and subjected to several procedures that applied specifically to COVID-19 vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, the manufacturers had been required to provide monthly safety reports in addition to the regular updates generated by NAFDAC activities.<\/p>\n<p>Adeyeye said the ministry of health and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) will announce when the vaccine becomes available for use in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has approved the use of Johnson &amp; Johnson (J&amp;J) COVID-19 vaccine in Nigeria.
