{"id":352153,"date":"2025-01-13T08:00:35","date_gmt":"2025-01-13T07:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=352153"},"modified":"2025-01-13T08:00:35","modified_gmt":"2025-01-13T07:00:35","slug":"oyo-files-murder-charges-against-oonis-ex-queen-others-over-funfair-stampede","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/13\/oyo-files-murder-charges-against-oonis-ex-queen-others-over-funfair-stampede\/","title":{"rendered":"Oyo files murder charges against Ooni\u2019s ex-Queen, others over funfair stampede"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The state government filed eight counts bordering on murder and manslaughter against the defendants over the stampede<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The organisers of the funfair that led to the stampede that claimed the lives of 35 children in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/04\/oyo-state-governor-mourns-ondo-ssgs-death\/\">Oyo State<\/a> have been charged to court by the State government.<\/p>\n<p>The state government filed eight counts bordering on murder and manslaughter against the defendants over the stampede which happened at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, on December 18, 2024<\/p>\n<p>According to the charge sheet, the defendants are the ex-queen of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola, the proprietor of an Ibadan-based radio station, Oriyomi Hamzat, and the school Principal of Abdulahi Fasasi.<\/p>\n<p>The charge sheet, marked I\/05C\/2025, sighted by was filed on Friday, January 10, 2025 before the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan with the State Government listed as the complainant while Silekunola, Hamzat abd and Babatunde were named as defendants.<\/p>\n<p>In the 18 counts, the government accused the defendants of \u201cconspiracy to commit a felony to wit: murder, manslaughter, conspiracy to commit an offense to wit: criminal negligence, and criminal negligence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The offences are said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.<\/p>\n<p>In the charge sheet obtained by The PUNCH, the prosecution disclosed the names and details of 14 out of the 35 children who died the incident.<\/p>\n<p>They include Musiliu Sofiat, female, eight years; Lekan Salami, male, seven years; Feyikemi Salam, female, 1.5 years; Olaniyan Joshua, male, 1.5 years; Laeef Muisi, male, eight years; Opeyemi Ayomide, female, four years; Adebayo-Fatimah, female, four years; Adebayo-Abibat, female, five years; Adeyanju Taiwo, female, eight years; Salaudeen Khalid, male, minor; Anjorin Faridat, female, 10 years; Nahaam Muisi, male, 13 years; and Babatunde Toheeb, male, 18 years.<\/p>\n<p>The state alleged that the defendants \u201cnegligently omitted to provide adequate security, crowd control mechanisms, and medical facilities to prevent a stampede at a children\u2019s funfair programme organised by you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It alleged that the defendants\u2019 \u201cnegligent omission resulted in the death of Musiliu Sofiat, aged 8 years, and 34 other children, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 308 and punishable under Section 344 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fasasi faces trial on a four-count charge, including conspiracy, acceleration of death, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde,had vowed that the state would prosecute the defendants.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants have been in prison custody since December 24, following their arrest by the police<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The state government filed eight counts bordering on murder and manslaughter against the defendants over the stampede The organisers of the funfair that led to the stampede that claimed the lives of 35 children in Oyo State have been charged to court by the State government.
