{"id":353024,"date":"2025-01-20T13:49:47","date_gmt":"2025-01-20T12:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=353024"},"modified":"2025-01-20T13:49:47","modified_gmt":"2025-01-20T12:49:47","slug":"blackout-vandals-destroy-over-18-transmission-towers-in-five-days-tcn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/20\/blackout-vandals-destroy-over-18-transmission-towers-in-five-days-tcn\/","title":{"rendered":"Blackout: Vandals destroy over 18 transmission towers in five days \u2013 TCN"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>TCN opined that those involved in the vandalism were sabotaging the nation&#8217;s stable electricity drive and every hand must be on desk to tackle the situation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Transmission Company of Nigeria has bemoaned the nefarious activities of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/07\/vandals-will-be-severely-punished-wike\/\">vandals and scavengers<\/a> who are destroying critical power infrastructure across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The company disclosed that over 18 transmission towers were vandalized between January 9 and 14, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The disclosure is contained in a statement on Sunday by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah.<\/p>\n<p>It stated that the incident happened in Rivers, Abia, and Kano States, noting that the incessant attacks is inimical to electricity supply nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>TCN opined that those involved in the vandalism were sabotaging the nation&#8217;s stable electricity drive and every hand must be on desk to tackle the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEngr. Emmanuel Okpa, General Manager of Transmission for the Port Harcourt Region, reported that routine patrols by linesmen on January 10, 2025, uncovered damage to towers 171 through 181 and tower 184. On January 14, vandals targeted towers 146, 147, and 149 along the Owerri\/Ahoada 132kV line in Rivers State, removing base brackets and compromising the stability of the towers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Abia State, Engr. Azuh Lucky, Head of the Lines Department for the Region, reported the theft of bolts, nuts, and structural members from towers 160 to 162 on the Alaoji\/Umuahia 132kV line, which was under repair on January 13, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, in Kano, towers 105, 106, and 107 along the Katsina-Gazoua 132\/33kV transmission line were critically damaged by vandals on January 9, 2025, compromising their structural integrity and risking collapse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the early hours of January 17, 2025, vandalized 132kV underground transmission cables were discovered by TCN engineers near Millennium Park in Abuja. This affected power supply to the central area and its environs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese incidents pose a significant challenge to our operations as a company. We have bolstered security measures, increased patrols, and added more vigilante groups, and we are also collaborating with security operatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, we need and are appealing for the full support of every Nigerian, particularly those in communities hosting our installations. We must collectively recognize that the transmission network is our collective asset and essential for our socioeconomic development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vandals and those who buy stolen materials are sabotaging the nation. All hands must be on deck to ensure the growth of the nation\u2019s power sector, which is critical to the development of our country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTCN\u2019s grid expansion plans are under tremendous strain due to the persistent vandalism of its installations.
