{"id":353080,"date":"2025-01-20T18:45:56","date_gmt":"2025-01-20T17:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=353080"},"modified":"2025-01-20T18:45:56","modified_gmt":"2025-01-20T17:45:56","slug":"lp-crisis-obi-otti-to-challenge-judgment-affirming-abure-chairmanship-at-supreme-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/20\/lp-crisis-obi-otti-to-challenge-judgment-affirming-abure-chairmanship-at-supreme-court\/","title":{"rendered":"LP crisis: Obi, Otti to challenge judgment affirming Abure chairmanship at Supreme Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The appellate court had said it found no probable cause and genuine reason to vacate the judgment that was delivered in Abure\u2019s favour by Justice Emeka Nwite<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The 29-man caretaker committee led by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has announced plan to challenge the judgment of Appeal Court affirming Julius Abure as the national chairman of the party.<\/p>\n<p>The committee on Sunday says it will approach the Supreme to contest the judgment of the appellate court over the leadership dispute in the party.<\/p>\n<p>The committee rejected the last Friday verdict of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, which upheld the party\u2019s March 2024 national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, and further affirmed Abure as the authentic LP National Chairman.<\/p>\n<p>The LP caretaker committee asserted that the appellate court judgment had raised issues that the Supreme Court would have to decide.<\/p>\n<p>The development is contained in a statement jointly signed by the committee\u2019s National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, and the National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>It stated, \u201cThe Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party is going to seek further clarification from the Supreme Court on the leadership dispute in the party. Senator Nenadi Esther Usman, the Chairman of the Committee, confirmed this fact at the weekend to clear the ambiguities in the ruling of the appeal court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe November 13, 2024, and January 17, 2025 rulings of the Court of Appeal have brought up issues that only the Supreme Court can clarify, and the Caretaker Committee has instructed their lawyer accordingly. We, therefore, instructed their supporters across the country to be patient.<\/p>\n<p>In the Friday judgment affirming Abure\u2019s leadership, a three-member panel, led by Justice Hamma Barka, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/17\/appeal-court-upholds-abure-as-labour-party-national-chairman\/\">validated the October 8, judgment<\/a> of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, to grant the LP under Abure\u2019s leadership, all the rights and privileges accorded a political party duly registered in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The appellate court had said it found no probable cause and genuine reason to vacate the judgment that was delivered in Abure\u2019s favour by Justice Emeka Nwite.<\/p>\n<p>It will be recalled that following a leadership crisis that rocked the LP, the National Executive Committee, of the party resolved to remove Abure as the National Chairman.<\/p>\n<p>To fill the leadership vacuum, the party constituted a 29-member caretaker committee, with ex-minister Nenadi Usman, as Chairman and Darlington Nwokocha as Secretary.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was the outcome of an expanded
