{"id":353186,"date":"2025-01-21T15:46:45","date_gmt":"2025-01-21T14:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=353186"},"modified":"2025-01-21T15:46:45","modified_gmt":"2025-01-21T14:46:45","slug":"fg-alerts-public-to-anthrax-outbreak-in-zamfara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/21\/fg-alerts-public-to-anthrax-outbreak-in-zamfara\/","title":{"rendered":"FG alerts public to Anthrax outbreak in Zamfara"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>Urges the public to remain vigilant, report any unusual illnesses in animals or humans<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has alerted Nigerians to the outbreak of anthrax, a zoonotic disease, in Zamfara.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ben Goong, Director, Information and Public Relations Department in the ministry, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the outbreak occurred on a farm in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/16\/zamfara-governor-approves-recruitment-of-additional-2000-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zamfara<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anthrax is an infection caused by bacterium Bacillus anthracis that can affect warm-blooded animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and wildlife, as well as humans, with potential high morbidity and mortality.<\/p>\n<p>The disease could be spread through contact with the bacterium\u2019s spores, which often appear in infectious animal products or by-products.<\/p>\n<p>Its symptoms include fever, coughing, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes, headaches, itching, and bleeding from major openings.<\/p>\n<p>Goong called on stakeholders as well as states bordering Zamfara to take immediate steps to prevent further spread of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>He urged stakeholders to heighten vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate risks associated with the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge the public to remain vigilant, report any unusual illnesses in animals or humans, and adhere to all preventive guidelines issued by relevant authorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile anthrax is preventable through coordinated efforts such as risk assessment, surveys, and ring vaccination of susceptible animals in high-risk areas, prompt detection and response are critical to containing its spread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ministry remains committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure a swift and effective response,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Urges the public to remain vigilant, report any unusual illnesses in animals or humans The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has alerted Nigerians to the outbreak of anthrax, a zoonotic disease, in Zamfara.
