{"id":353644,"date":"2025-01-25T12:33:39","date_gmt":"2025-01-25T11:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=353644"},"modified":"2025-01-25T17:03:11","modified_gmt":"2025-01-25T16:03:11","slug":"just-in-impeached-obasa-says-he-remains-lagos-assembly-speaker-cites-constitutional-disregard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/25\/just-in-impeached-obasa-says-he-remains-lagos-assembly-speaker-cites-constitutional-disregard\/","title":{"rendered":"JUST-IN: Impeached Obasa says he remains Lagos assembly speaker, cites constitutional disregard"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>He was replaced by Mojisola Meranda, who was Obasa\u2019s deputy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has insisted that he remains the rightful speaker based on constitutional provisions.<\/p>\n<p>Obasa made this declaration on Saturday in Ikeja GRA during a welcome event organized by supporters from Agege, Alimosho, and Kosofe local government areas.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that Obasa was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/13\/just-in-lagos-assembly-impeaches-speaker-obasa-amid-multibillion-naira-fraud-allegations\/\"><strong>removed<\/strong><\/a> from office by his colleagues over allegations of gross misconduct and financial mismanagement.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing his removal, Obasa argued that the process didn&#8217;t follow constitutional procedures.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that he would accept his removal if it was carried out according to constitutional guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>The former speaker rejected allegations of financial misappropriation levelled against him by lawmakers, describing them as \u201cimpossible\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not disturbed; I am not afraid of the developments that happened at the assembly,\u201d Obasa said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI believe in removal; there\u2019s no impeachment in the assembly. You cannot impeach (the) speaker. Probably, there\u2019s a mistake from them. You can only remove the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if you must remove (the speaker), you must ensure you follow the rules of the game. I am not afraid to be removed; what else am I looking for if I\u2019ve served as speaker, and member of the house of assembly since 2003 up till date?
