{"id":353717,"date":"2025-01-26T09:37:30","date_gmt":"2025-01-26T08:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=353717"},"modified":"2025-01-26T09:37:30","modified_gmt":"2025-01-26T08:37:30","slug":"unicef-only-9-6-of-kano-primary-school-pupils-can-read-proficiently","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/26\/unicef-only-9-6-of-kano-primary-school-pupils-can-read-proficiently\/","title":{"rendered":"UNICEF: Only 9.6% of Kano Primary School Pupils Can Read Proficiently"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"marker:text-textOff list-disc pl-8\">\n<li><strong><span class=\"\">Only 9.6% of primary school pupils in Kano are proficient in reading, while 11.2% demonstrate basic numeracy skills, UNICEF reports<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"\">Approximately one million children, or 32%, are not enrolled in formal education, highlighting a significant education crisis in Kano<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) has revealed alarming statistics about education in Kano State, Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>According to UNICEF, only 9.6% of primary school pupils in the state are proficient in reading, while just 11.2% demonstrate basic numeracy skills.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF Chief of the Kano Field Office, Mr. Rahama Mohammed, disclosed this during a press conference marking the 2025 International Day for Education in Kano on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The event\u2019s theme, <em>\u201cAI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,\u201d<\/em> was described as highly relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammed highlighted the state\u2019s ongoing education crisis, citing data from the 2021 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS).<\/p>\n<p>He revealed that nearly one million children, or approximately 32% of primary school-aged children in Kano, are not enrolled in formal education.<\/p>\n<p>To address these challenges, UNICEF has been actively supporting reforms, including the integration of Quranic schools into the formal education system.<\/p>\n<p>The organization has developed an integrated curriculum and trained over 290 Quranic school Mallams and proprietors across Kano and Jigawa States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese efforts aim to ensure children in Quranic schools gain basic education alongside religious studies,\u201d Mohammed explained.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/08\/03\/1-6m-children-out-of-school-in-north-east-unicef\/\">UNICEF<\/a> has focused on improving school infrastructure with climate-resilient designs and the construction of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities. These interventions have benefited 39,432 children\u201419,810 boys and 19,622 girls\u2014through upgrades in 33 schools across Kano and Jigawa.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF has also implemented initiatives to enhance education quality, including the professional development of 1,109 teachers in areas like Reading and Numeracy Activities (RANA) and Early Childhood Development.
