{"id":35473,"date":"2021-05-19T13:00:42","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T12:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=35473"},"modified":"2021-05-19T13:02:00","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T12:02:00","slug":"digital-currency-china-orders-financial-institutions-to-end-crypto-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/19\/digital-currency-china-orders-financial-institutions-to-end-crypto-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital currency: China orders financial institutions to end crypto services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A ban on financial firms and payment institutions from offering services related to cryptocurrency transactions has been placed by the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a joint statement released by three\u00a0Chinese industry bodies overseeing the financial sector on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The bodies are the National Internet Finance Association of China, China Banking Association; and the Payment and Clearing Association of China.<\/p>\n<p>The country also warned retail traders to be cautious of the risks involved in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/20\/cryptocurrency-ban-nigerians-are-free-to-use-bitcoin-says-cbn-declares\/\">cryptocurrency<\/a> investments while also calling on member institutions to abide by existing regulatory provisions regarding digital currencies.<\/p>\n<p>Under the ban, banks and online payments channels must not offer clients any service involving cryptocurrency, such as registration, trading, clearing and settlement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently, crypto currency prices have skyrocketed and plummeted, and speculative trading of cryptocurrency has rebounded, seriously infringing on the safety of people\u2019s property and disrupting the normal economic and financial order,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>China also banned crypto exchanges and initial coin offerings (IOCs) but has not barred individuals from holding cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, these institutions must not provide saving, trust or pledging services of cryptocurrency, nor issue financial product related to cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s financial regulators also noted the risks of cryptocurrency trading, saying that digital currencies \u201care not supported by real value\u201d, their prices are \u201cextremely easy\u201d to manipulate, and trading contracts are not protected by Chinese law.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time the East Asian country is placing restricting measures against the digital currency. In 2013, the financial regulators banned banks and payment companies from providing bitcoin-related services.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2017, China banned IOCs and cryptocurrency trading platforms in a bid to protect investors and curb financial risks.<\/p>\n<p>Also in June 2019, the People\u2019s Bank of China said it would block access to all domestic and foreign cryptocurrency exchanges and initial coin offering websites, aiming to clamp down on all cryptocurrency trading with a ban on foreign exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>Following the announcement, the value of the world\u2019s cryptocurrencies declined by 2.5 percent to about $50 billion, pushing this week\u2019s staggering losses to roughly $500 billion from a Wednesday high above $2.5 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Bitcoin dropped by 7 percent from its intraday high on Tuesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A ban on financial firms and payment institutions from offering services related to cryptocurrency transactions has been placed by the Chinese government.
