{"id":355090,"date":"2025-02-08T08:10:06","date_gmt":"2025-02-08T07:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=355090"},"modified":"2025-02-08T08:10:06","modified_gmt":"2025-02-08T07:10:06","slug":"six-million-to-die-from-hiv-aids-if-us-ends-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/02\/08\/six-million-to-die-from-hiv-aids-if-us-ends-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Six million to die from HIV\/AIDS if US ends funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>He stated that although HIV\/AIDS programmes have been exempted from last month\u2019s US foreign aid funding freeze, concerns still linger about the future of treatment programmes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The United Nations AIDS agency, UNAIDS, has warned of the catastrophic human cost if the United States pulls funding for HIV and AIDS programmes.<\/p>\n<p>The global organisation disclosed that over six million people could die from HIV and AIDS in the space of four years if the President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/02\/07\/trump-to-sanction-international-criminal-court-over-netanyahus-arrest-warrant\/\">Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> administration goes ahead with the plan to halt funding.<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Executive Director of UNAIDS, Christine Stegling, made the disclosure while addressing reporters in Geneva on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that although HIV\/AIDS programmes have been exempted from last month\u2019s US foreign aid funding freeze, concerns still linger about the future of treatment programmes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of confusion, especially on the community level, how the waiver will be implemented. We\u2019re seeing a lot of disruption of delivery of treatment services,\u201d Stegling said.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that Trump put hundreds of millions of dollars\u2019 worth of foreign aid donations on hold for 90 days upon taking office on January 20.<\/p>\n<p>However, in the following days, the US State Department issued a waiver on the President\u2019s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, PEPFAR, the world\u2019s leading HIV initiative, for life-saving humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n<p>While welcoming the waiver, Stegling stressed the situation remains unsettling.<\/p>\n<p>Amid a broader decline of funding, Stegling warned there would be a 400% increase in AIDS deaths if PEPFAR financial support is not re-authorized between 2025 and 2029.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s 6.3 million people, 6.3 million AIDS-related deaths that will occur in future\u2026Any penny, any cut, any pause, will matter for all of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Ethiopia, we have 5,000 public health worker contracts that are funded by U.S. assistance.
