{"id":355273,"date":"2025-02-10T07:13:18","date_gmt":"2025-02-10T06:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=355273"},"modified":"2025-02-10T07:13:18","modified_gmt":"2025-02-10T06:13:18","slug":"1-07bn-health-funds-must-be-wisely-utilised-snake-monkey-mustnt-swallow-money-atiku-warns-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/02\/10\/1-07bn-health-funds-must-be-wisely-utilised-snake-monkey-mustnt-swallow-money-atiku-warns-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"$1.07bn health funds must be wisely utilised, snake, monkey mustn\u2019t swallow money \u2013 Atiku warns FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>He warned that Nigerians don&#8217;t want to be inundated with fictitious stories of the money being swallowed by animals later.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Former Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/02\/04\/coalition-why-el-rufai-amaechi-atiku-are-criticising-conspiring-against-tinubu-gov-uba-sani\/\">Atiku Abubakar<\/a> has admonished the Federal Government to ensure that $1.07 billion allocated for improving Nigeria&#8217;s healthcare system must be judiciously used for that purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Atiku, who issued the admonition in statement on Sunday, stated that Tinubu must display transparency and accountability on how the intervention fund would be utilised.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that Nigerians don&#8217;t want to be inundated with fictitious stories of the money being swallowed by animals later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaims of animals such as snakes, termites, gorillas and monkeys swallowing public funds must never be the fate of the funds budgeted for the critical sector of health in the 2025 budget,\u201d Atiku stressed.<\/p>\n<p>The former Vice President underscored the importance of accountability, stressing that every kobo must be properly utilised to strengthen Nigeria\u2019s healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cIn recent years, there have been bizarre claims of animals being held accountable for missing public funds. Some of these fairytale-like claims were never investigated or punished to deter future offenders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgainst the backdrop of dwindling resources that has been exacerbated by the withdrawal of support in certain areas of our healthcare services, it is important that every kobo budgeted for the health sector has to be maximally utilised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo this end, the Federal Government has to be deliberate about putting mechanisms in place for public audit and accountability in its $1.07bn budgetary appropriation in the health sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Atiku criticised the Federal Government for failing to provide a clear framework detailing how over $1bn would be spent in the primary health sector.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that while healthcare investment was essential for improving access to quality services, the government has a moral duty to disclose how these funds will be utilised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have read that the Federal Government plans to expend a whopping $1.07bn in the primary health sector. This amount is in addition to the N2.48tn earlier proposed for the health sector in the initial budget draft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigerians deserve to know the details of these loans and how the funds will be spent.
