{"id":356027,"date":"2025-02-17T08:16:44","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T07:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=356027"},"modified":"2025-02-17T08:19:12","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T07:19:12","slug":"i-did-not-set-out-to-destroy-afe-babalola-i-only-wrote-about-nigerian-judiciary-farotimi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/02\/17\/i-did-not-set-out-to-destroy-afe-babalola-i-only-wrote-about-nigerian-judiciary-farotimi\/","title":{"rendered":"I Did Not Set Out To Destroy Afe Babalola, I Only Wrote About Nigerian Judiciary \u2013 Farotimi"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong> He disclosed that the book is a product of a well-research work that chronicles his experiences and observations about the Nigerian judicial system.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has stated that his book \u2018Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System\u2019 is not a work hinged on idle chatter, streets gossips, conjecture and conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n<p>He disclosed that the book is a product of a well-research work that chronicles his experiences and observations about the Nigerian judicial system.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that the book is critique of systemic corruption within the judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>This is even as he reiterated that the aim of the book is not to besmirch the reputation of anyone but to beam the searchlight on things he feels Nigerians should know about the nation&#8217;s Judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the controversial book had put him in the crosshairs of founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN).<\/p>\n<p>Babalola (SAN), on January 27, agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/01\/29\/court-strikes-out-defamation-suit-against-farotimi\/\">withdraw<\/a> the cases preferred against Farotimi.<\/p>\n<p>Babalola had written to the police commissioner in Ekiti State claiming that Farotimi defamed him in a book titled \u2018Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.<\/p>\n<p>The police subsequently arrested the activist lawyer and arraigned him before two courts in Ekiti.<\/p>\n<p>However, Babalola had announced his withdrawal of the case against Farotimi citing the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other top traditional rulers.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during during the Toyin Falola Interviews on Sunday, Farotimi said anyone who feels the book is replete with falsehoods and lies should take him up on Sunday such claims.<\/p>\n<p>He also disclosed that while the police had withdrawn criminal charges against him following Babalola\u2019s petition withdrawal, he still faced four civil suits across different states, all filed by members of Babalola\u2019s law office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy inability to speak to certain aspects of this issue is borne out of the fact that, despite the discontinuation of the criminal proceeding, I still have four suits that I am aware of, in four different states of the federation, filed by members of the same law office, against my person.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not sit down in a beer parlour; I was not at an officers\u2019 mess; I was not gossiping. It was not idle, cheap talk. I wrote a book,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us deal with veracity. Anybody can go and read and then come back and challenge me with the lie that I have told,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n<p>Dismissing claims that the controversy surrounding his book is a personal battle, Farotimi insisted that what is on trial is not his reputation, but the Nigerian legal system itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a trial of Dele Farotimi. Let nobody make that error. It is a trial of the legal system that we have built as a collective,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that his work was written in pursuit of justice, not personal vendettas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChief Afe Babalola is more than old enough to be my father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not set out to destroy the man or to tarnish his image. Nothing personal. I was writing about the institution of the judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMultiple names were mentioned in the book, and offices were mentioned. I did not set out to libel anybody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI simply told the truth of what I saw. All I did was write a book.
