{"id":357950,"date":"2025-03-07T14:10:08","date_gmt":"2025-03-07T13:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=357950"},"modified":"2025-03-07T14:10:08","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T13:10:08","slug":"iom-repatriates-140-nigerians-stranded-in-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/03\/07\/iom-repatriates-140-nigerians-stranded-in-sudan\/","title":{"rendered":"IOM repatriates 140 Nigerians stranded in Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The returnees include 64 women, 36 children, and four infants under 12 months old, as well as migrants with health conditions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>International Organisation for Migration says 140 Nigerians who were marooned in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/08\/13\/sudan-crisis-mastermind-planned-to-destabilize-nigeria-says-igp\/\">Sudan<\/a> for months have returned home.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Friday, IOM stated that the repatriation exercise was part of its Voluntary Humanitarian Return.<\/p>\n<p>The returnees include 64 women, 36 children, and four infants under 12 months old, as well as migrants with health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>According to the organisation, the chartered flight \u2013 the first since the crisis in Sudan began \u2013 landed at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on February 27, where Nigerian Government officials received the returnees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing their return, each of the migrants received post-arrival assistance including counselling, medical attention \u2013 mental health and psychosocial support where necessary, as well as assistance for onward transportation to their final destinations. IOM and partners will also ensure their reintegration through additional support based on individual needs,\u201d IOM stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the war, we found ourselves out in the open with no accommodation and no food. Things kept getting tougher, and the problem was that there was no hope because the war kept going on,\u201d said Bashir, one of the returnees. \u201cWe are grateful to be back home\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The international organization noted that since the outbreak of war in Sudan in 2023, more than 12 million people have been forced to flee their homes to resettle in other parts of the country or seek refuge in neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA considerable number of them were migrants, including third-country nationals who were circular workers, students and professionals who had made Sudan their home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the war rages, IOM has worked closely with embassies and consular offices from various countries to coordinate protection, assistance and access to services for stranded migrants,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMigrants who have transited through or are living in Sudan since the conflict began have found themselves stranded as the humanitarian situation deteriorates in the country. Many have lost everything\u2014documents, homes, and belongings. For many, Voluntary Humanitarian Return remains the best option for a safe journey home\u201d, said Mohamed Refaat, IOM Sudan Chief of Mission.<\/p>\n<p>It highlighted that the IOM\u2019s Voluntary Humanitarian Return programme serves as a lifeline for stranded migrants, providing a safe pathway for those facing dire conditions who wish to return to their countries but lack the means.<\/p>\n<p>The VHR charter flight was closely coordinated by authorities in Sudan and Nigeria, including the Nigerian Embassy in Sudan, the Sudanese Ministry of Interior, but also the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons in Nigeria, Nigeria Immigration Services, and many other local actors in Kano.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are happy to see the positive results of partnerships and cooperation in saving lives\u201d, said Ms. Paola Pace, Chief of Mission a.i. for IOM Nigeria. \u201cIOM remains committed and will continue to work tirelessly to extend support to all migrants and ensure no one is left behind\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n<p>It also said the VHR charter was made possible with the support of the European Union through the Migrant Protection, Return and Reintegration Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The returnees include 64 women, 36 children, and four infants under 12 months old, as well as migrants with health conditions.
