{"id":358007,"date":"2025-03-09T10:24:50","date_gmt":"2025-03-09T09:24:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=358007"},"modified":"2025-03-09T10:24:50","modified_gmt":"2025-03-09T09:24:50","slug":"lagos-assembly-operating-like-private-firm-ignoring-due-process-bode-george","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/03\/09\/lagos-assembly-operating-like-private-firm-ignoring-due-process-bode-george\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos assembly operating like private firm, ignoring due process \u2014 Bode George"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>George insisted that anyone accused of misconduct should first clear their name before being considered for reinstatement in a democratic institution.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>He questioned why Obasa was reinstated without addressing allegations of financial misconduct that initially led to his removal from office.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, has criticised the Lagos state house of assembly for reinstating Mudashiru Obasa as speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Obasa, was initially removed by a majority of lawmakers over alleged financial misconduct but was later reinstated, which George called a \u201cdisregard for due process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During an interview with The Tribune on Saturday, George accused the assembly of acting like a \u201cprivate enterprise\u201d instead of a legislative body committed to democracy.<\/p>\n<p>He questioned why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/03\/03\/just-in-lagos-assembly-returns-mudashiru-obasa-as-speaker\/\"><strong>Obasa was reinstated<\/strong><\/a> without first addressing the allegations that led to his removal, arguing that such actions undermine democratic principles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they are deceiving themselves, they cannot deceive the general public,\u201d George said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are the leader of a party and the party was going to go through a procedure, and they accused the speaker of a lot of inappropriate activities \u2013 financial and otherwise \u2013 shouldn\u2019t you even address those issues?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince he didn\u2019t do it, there is no need for Obasa to respond to the allegations levelled against him. The same people came back and reinstated or re-elected him. It is an indecent approach to what democracy is all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you were accused of certain misdemeanor openly and people went through a process by which they said enough of you, if you want to come back, you know you will have to defend yourself first. It\u2019s already in the public domain, but there was an order that he should be reinstated since it is a private enterprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you return people like that in a democratic dispensation to override whatever others had been saying? Is it that those Assembly members didn\u2019t know what they had been talking about before they removed Obasa, or they are absolutely acting like a military organisation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PDP chieftain also alleged that a single individual appeared to have control over the assembly\u2019s decisions and operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can see who is in charge. It\u2019s a private enterprise, he can hire and fire. Is that democracy?
