Sani Abacha (rtd) has expressed disgust at the portrayal of the former military leader by former Military President Gen. Ibrahim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/02\/25\/babangida-book-filled-with-lies-distorted-facts-reference-material-for-criminals-vatsa-family\/\">Babangida<\/a> in the latter&#8217;s new book.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that Gen. Babangida had in his recent book titled, \u201cA Journey in Service\u201d alleged that the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election \u201cwas the responsibility of the late General Sani Abacha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In their reaction, the Abacha family said Babangida&#8217;s claims has elicited controversy, hence the need to issue a rebuttal to refute his assertions and set the records straight in the interest of historical accuracy and justice.<\/p>\n<p>In statement on Sunday by Mohammed Abacha, the Abacha family stated that Babangida&#8217;s claims regarding the June 12 election and Abacha\u2019s role in its annulment are distortion of facts.<\/p>\n<p>The statement which described the allegation as false, warned Babangida to stop tarnishing the image of their late patriarch.<\/p>\n<p>The statement said, \u201cAny attempt to shift this blame onto General Sani Abacha, who was a very senior military officer within the regime, is a deliberate distortion of historical facts. For years, various actors have attempted to rewrite the history of that critical period in Nigeria\u2019s democratic evolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The family in the statement argued that Gen. Abacha was neither the Head of State nor the Commander-in-Chief at the time the June 12 election was annulled, saying, \u201cThe decision to annul the election was made under the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, who, as the then Head of State, held absolute executive powers and was solely responsible for the actions of his government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abacha\u2019s family also urged Nigerians to be \u201cwary of revisionist narratives that seek to manipulate public perception for personal or political reasons\u201d, stressing that \u201cThe memory of our late father and leader, General Sani Abacha, must not be tarnished by baseless accusations meant to absolve those who were truly responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On how Gen. Abacha saved Gen. Babangida, Abacha\u2019s family said, \u201cWe also find it necessary to state that at the time General Babangida\u2019s life was under threat, it was General Abacha who came to his rescue, ensuring his safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe regret that \u2018A Journey in Service\u2019 missed the opportunity and failed to make history as a truthful and objective account of past events.
