{"id":358563,"date":"2025-03-19T21:01:13","date_gmt":"2025-03-19T20:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=358563"},"modified":"2025-03-19T21:01:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T20:01:13","slug":"court-sets-aside-order-stopping-senate-committee-from-probing-senator-natasha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/03\/19\/court-sets-aside-order-stopping-senate-committee-from-probing-senator-natasha\/","title":{"rendered":"Court sets aside order stopping Senate Committee from probing senator Natasha"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Investigation of the senator, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, followed a ruckus during a Senate plenary session on February 20, 2025.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Federal High Court in Abuja has vacated an injunction restraining the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions from investigating Senator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/03\/19\/nigerian-senate-is-like-secret-society-members-scared-of-criticising-akpabio-senator-natasha\/\">Natasha<\/a> Akpoti-Uduaghan.<\/p>\n<p>The restraining order issued on March 4, 2025 was lifted on Wednesday by Justice Obiora Egwuatu on the ground that events have overtaken it in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Investigation of the senator, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, followed a ruckus during a Senate plenary session on February 20, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The ruckus was engendered by a heated exchange between Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seat reallocation.<\/p>\n<p>Her actions during the session were deemed an affront to the senate, leading to her referral to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions for alleged misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>However, rather than appear before the committee to defend herself, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan sought judicial intervention to halt the probe.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the court\u2019s initial ex parte order, the Senate proceeded with its investigations, concluding the process and presenting its report on the Senate floor on March 6, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the committee\u2019s findings, the Senate collectively voted to suspend Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the second respondent filed an application challenging the ex parte order, arguing that it had effectively determined the substantive issue prematurely.<\/p>\n<p>Upon reviewing the arguments, Justice Egwuatu in a ruling set aside the order, reaffirming the Senate\u2019s legislative authority.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned to March 25, 2025, for the hearing of all pending preliminary objections, applications and the plaintiff\u2019s request for a mandatory injunction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Investigation of the senator, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, followed a ruckus during a Senate plenary session on February 20, 2025.
