{"id":359985,"date":"2025-07-02T10:57:17","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T09:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=359985"},"modified":"2025-07-02T10:57:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T09:57:17","slug":"breaking-scourt-adjourns-judgment-indefinitely-in-edo-governorship-election-suit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/07\/02\/breaking-scourt-adjourns-judgment-indefinitely-in-edo-governorship-election-suit\/","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: S&#8217;court adjourns judgment indefinitely in Edo governorship election suit"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-18 ai-optimize-introduction\"><strong>Ighodalo asked court to void Okpebholo\u2019s victory and declare him governor.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-19\"><b>INEC said PDP can\u2019t seek benefit from an election it termed unlawful.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-7 ai-optimize-introduction\">The Supreme court has adjourned indefinitely the judgment in the legal tussle over the Edo State governorship election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-8\">The apex court took the decision after hearing arguments for and against the election that produced senator Monday Okpebholo as governor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">The justice of the Supreme Court, Garba Lawal, who presided over the matter, said the judgment date would be communicated to all parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-10\">The appeal was filed by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr Asue Ighodalo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\">His counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ken Mosia, prayed the court to nullify Okpebholo\u2019s victory and declare Ighodalo as winner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-12\">Ighodalo told the court he won the majority of lawful votes cast in the election and should be returned as governor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-13\">But the Independent National Electoral Commission, represented by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kanu Agabi, urged the court to dismiss the appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-14\">Agabi said Ighodalo and the PDP had earlier declared the election invalid and unlawful in their petition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-15\">He argued that the same petitioners could not turn around to ask the court to pronounce them winners of the same election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-16\">According to Agabi, the PDP and its candidate cannot benefit from an election they themselves labelled illegal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-17\">INEC accused them of inconsistency and asked the court to dismiss their claims for lacking merit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ighodalo asked court to void Okpebholo\u2019s victory and declare him governor.
