{"id":360135,"date":"2025-07-03T21:56:21","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T20:56:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=360135"},"modified":"2025-07-03T21:56:21","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T20:56:21","slug":"2027-presidency-if-i-get-adc-ticket-i-will-only-do-one-term-amaechi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/07\/03\/2027-presidency-if-i-get-adc-ticket-i-will-only-do-one-term-amaechi\/","title":{"rendered":"2027 presidency: If I get ADC ticket, I will only do one term \u2014 Amaechi"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-6 ai-optimize-introduction\"><strong>Amaechi backs power shift to the south, insists presidency must rotate to ensure national fairness and peace.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"ai-optimize-7\"><b>Ex-minister accuses Tinubu\u2019s govt of failing across board, says Buhari outperformed him in security and governance.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-8\">Former governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared his willingness to serve only one term as president if elected in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">Amaechi, who also served as minister of transportation under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, said his ambition is subject to a coalition arrangement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-10\">He spoke during an <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/channelstv\/status\/1940848335688028312?s=48&amp;t=_uSBBsPawhEh1ubyNAC6kA\"><strong>interview on Politics Today<\/strong><\/a>, a Channels Television programme, on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\">The former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said the rotation of power must be respected for Nigeria\u2019s political stability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-12\">\u201cFor now, the way Nigeria is, you must keep to that unwritten agreement that says south eight years, north eight years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-13\">Amaechi recalled that he led a revolt against the PDP government in 2011 because it reneged on the zoning agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-14\">\u201cI said, \u2018no, that will be unfair\u2019. That will lead to instability at its peak, as the north will react.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-15\">\u201cThe best thing to do is to support a northern candidate to continue the balance of power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-16\">He insisted that the same principle should now apply to the south.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-17\">\u201cJust like I will be telling the northerners that, no, the south should be allowed to complete their tenure \u2014 if the south isn&#8217;t allowed to complete their tenure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-18\">When asked if he would serve a single term if given the ticket of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, he replied, \u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-19\">He said his current posture was guided by the understanding within the emerging coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-20\">\u201cIf not for the coalition agreement, the answer to whether I\u2019ll run (as president) would have been an outright yes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-21\">\u201cBut what did we agree? Everyone should keep aside their ambition. Let\u2019s first get the platform. Let\u2019s build it before talking about the presidency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-22\">Amaechi came second behind Bola Tinubu in the APC\u2019s 2022 presidential primary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-23\">He took a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/channelstv\/status\/1940848335688028312?s=48&amp;t=_uSBBsPawhEh1ubyNAC6kA\"><strong>swipe<\/strong><\/a> at the Tinubu-led administration, saying it lags behind Buhari\u2019s on virtually every front.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-24\">\u201cBuhari will tell you he didn\u2019t achieve everything, but his government was better than this one by all standards,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-25\">\u201cSecurity under Buhari was a priority. Transportation saw progress. INEC had more independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-26\">He alleged that government officials are now influencing INEC to frustrate opposition parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-27\">\u201cToday, they can\u2019t even register a party because government officials are telling INEC not to,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-28\">\u201cSo how is INEC an umpire when it takes instructions from government?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-29\">He also recalled resisting an attempt by former president Goodluck Jonathan to impose a chairman on the Nigeria Governors\u2019 Forum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-30\">\u201cWhen I heard the president wanted to appoint a chairman for the Governors\u2019 Forum, I almost collapsed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-31\">\u201cWe demanded an election, and I won \u2014 19 votes to Jang\u2019s 16. Back then, governors had a voice. Now? They don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-32\">Amaechi praised Buhari\u2019s conservative borrowing approach, noting he once blocked a loan request at the Federal Executive Council meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-33\">\u201cBuhari once rejected a minister\u2019s loan proposal at FEC and insisted only key ministries like transport should access credit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amaechi backs power shift to the south, insists presidency must rotate to ensure national fairness and peace.
