{"id":360235,"date":"2025-07-05T11:33:25","date_gmt":"2025-07-05T10:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=360235"},"modified":"2025-07-05T11:33:25","modified_gmt":"2025-07-05T10:33:25","slug":"seventeen-crushed-to-death-in-calabar-road-accident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/07\/05\/seventeen-crushed-to-death-in-calabar-road-accident\/","title":{"rendered":"Seventeen crushed to death in Calabar road accident"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The bus was said to be travelling from Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to Calabar, the Cross River State capital<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A fatal road <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/03\/17\/seven-travellers-die-in-imo-road-accident\/\">accident<\/a> in Cross River State has claimed the lives of at least seventeen people.<\/p>\n<p>The tragic incident, involving a containerised trailer and a commercial bus, happened on Friday afternoon on the deplorable Calabar-Itu federal highway.<\/p>\n<p>According to locals privy to the mishap, the accident happened when a 40-foot trailer veered off its lane and crashed into a 16-seater bus killing all its occupants.<\/p>\n<p>The bus was said to be travelling from Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to Calabar, the Cross River State capital.<\/p>\n<p>The eyewitness, identified simply as Emmanuel, said the trailer fell directly on the bus, killing all 17 occupants, 16 passengers and the driver, on the spot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were no survivors. The trailer completely smashed the bus. It was a horrific scene,\u201d Emmanuel recounted.<\/p>\n<p>He blamed the accident on the appalling and atrocious state of the Calabar-Itu highway, which he said has been undergoing repairs for more than 15 years without any meaningful progress.<\/p>\n<p>As of the time of filing this report, the corpses of the victims had been evacuated to an undisclosed mortuary by community youths and concerned individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to reach officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police in Calabar for comments were unsuccessful, as neither agency was willing to speak on the incident<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The bus was said to be travelling from Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
