{"id":360847,"date":"2025-07-16T15:13:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T14:13:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=360847"},"modified":"2025-07-16T15:13:19","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T14:13:19","slug":"why-africa-is-dumping-ground-for-substandard-petroleum-products-dangote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/07\/16\/why-africa-is-dumping-ground-for-substandard-petroleum-products-dangote\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Africa Is Dumping Ground for Substandard Petroleum Products \u2013 Dangote"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Dangote said the refinery project was fuelled by a burning desire to make Nigeria self-sufficient in refined petroleum products<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Africa&#8217;s richest man, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/07\/15\/again-independent-marketers-reduce-petrol-prices-after-dangote-cut\/\">Aliko Dangote<\/a>, has bemoaned the continent&#8217;s heavy reliance on fuel imports to meet its energy needs.<\/p>\n<p>Dangote, who is the president of Dangote Industries Limited, observed that the situation has turned Africa into a dumping ground for substandard petroleum products.<\/p>\n<p>He made the observations in an interview with journalists, where he also underscored the need for urgent investment in Africa\u2019s energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on what motivated him to build his massive $19 billion Dangote Refinery, Dangote<br \/>\nsaid the refinery project was fuelled by a burning desire to make Nigeria self-sufficient in refined petroleum products and encourage similar initiatives across the continent.<\/p>\n<p>He said the current situation of things in Africa regarding energy security is worrisome and unacceptable, considering the continent&#8217;s vast crude oil reserves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApart from Algeria and Libya, which are self-sufficient, virtually every other African country is an importer,\u201d adding that \u201cAfrica has no business importing fuel. We have oil, but we have failed to refine it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lamented that the lack of refining capacity has created opportunities for the inflow of poor-quality products that undermine health and environmental standards.<\/p>\n<p>Dangote acknowledged the daunting challenges faced during the construction of the refinery, noting that many doubted the group\u2019s capacity to execute a project of such scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I had known the scale of challenges we would face, I wouldn\u2019t have started at all,\u201d he said. \u201cBut we believed nothing is impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that the success of the refinery should serve as a rallying point for African governments and investors to embrace large-scale, transformative projects that tackle pressing socio-economic problems.<\/p>\n<p>Dangote also called on wealthy Nigerians to invest in the country, warning that real development cannot occur without strong local investments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo nation develops without significant investments.
