{"id":361012,"date":"2025-07-19T21:25:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T20:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=361012"},"modified":"2025-07-19T21:27:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T20:27:17","slug":"senator-natasha-pledges-tuesday-return-to-senate-insists-on-court-backed-reinstatement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/07\/19\/senator-natasha-pledges-tuesday-return-to-senate-insists-on-court-backed-reinstatement\/","title":{"rendered":"Natasha pledges Tuesday return to senate, insists on court-backed reinstatement"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The Kogi senator said suspension hindered legislative roles but not her constituency work or federal budget input.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>She insisted the senate must obey court decision declaring her suspension unconstitutional.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The senator representing Kogi central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has announced her intention to resume plenary on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The senator said she had notified the senate of her decision to return, adding that her letter was formally submitted.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Saturday during a training event in her constituency, Akpoti-Uduaghan said the court\u2019s decision supported her return.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have pretty much two months more before the six months expire,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelstv.com\/2025\/07\/19\/just-in-senator-natasha-akpoti-uduaghan-vows-to-resume-at-senate-on-tuesday\/\"><strong>she was quoted as saying by Channels Television.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, I have written to the senate again telling them that I\u2019m resuming on the 22nd, which is on Tuesday, by the special grace of God.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will be there, because the court did make the decision on that. Now, they argue that it\u2019s an order \u2014 it\u2019s not an order, but it is a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explained that although the suspension did not stop her from carrying out constituency work, it limited her participation in legislative duties.<\/p>\n<p>She stated that she was unable to sponsor motions and bills on the floor of the senate during the period of suspension.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did mention that every senator has three major functions \u2014 legislative, which is the creation of laws and review of treaties,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we have oversight \u2014 which is to oversee ministers and agencies. And then the third is representation \u2014 which I\u2019m doing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhereby I identify the problems and the challenges of my community, and I make sure I present them and have them captured in the federal budget. And I have done pretty well with that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, I do miss putting up my bills there, but it didn\u2019t stop me from working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6 over an alleged breach of the senate\u2019s standing rules.<\/p>\n<p>The suspension followed her sexual harassment allegation against the senate president, Senator Godswill Akpabio.<\/p>\n<p>She later filed a case against the suspension in court.<\/p>\n<p>In July, the federal high court in Abuja ruled that her suspension was unconstitutional and ordered her reinstatement.<\/p>\n<p>Senate President Akpabio has since approached the court of appeal to challenge the ruling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Kogi senator said suspension hindered legislative roles but not her constituency work or federal budget input.
