{"id":361128,"date":"2025-07-22T09:49:26","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T08:49:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=361128"},"modified":"2025-07-22T09:49:26","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T08:49:26","slug":"court-grants-fg-ownership-of-222k-digital-assets-traced-to-chinese-fraud-syndicate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/07\/22\/court-grants-fg-ownership-of-222k-digital-assets-traced-to-chinese-fraud-syndicate\/","title":{"rendered":"Court grants FG ownership of $222k digital assets traced to Chinese fraud syndicate"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>EFCC linked over N2.2bn to Nigerian firm used by foreign cybercrime ring.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>Genting International\u2019s Union Bank account received suspicious crypto inflows for eight months.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the final forfeiture of $222,729 worth of digital assets recovered from Chinese nationals.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Alexander Owoeye gave the order on Monday following a motion filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-graft agency said the assets were retrieved from a syndicate of 792 suspects linked to cryptocurrency and romance scams.<\/p>\n<p>In February, the court had issued an interim forfeiture order on the assets, directing the EFCC to publish a notice in a national newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>The publication was to give any interested party 14 days to appear and show cause why the assets should not be permanently forfeited.<\/p>\n<p>During Monday\u2019s proceedings, Zeenat Atiku, EFCC counsel, said the application was backed by an affidavit sworn by Muazu Abdulrahman, an EFCC investigator.<\/p>\n<p>Abdulrahman disclosed that the syndicate operated through Genting International Co. Limited, a firm registered in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>According to the affidavit, the company\u2019s Union Bank account received over N2.26 billion between April and December 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The EFCC stated that two cryptocurrency vendors \u2014 Chukwuemeka Okeke and Alhassan Aminu Garba \u2014 were the major fund sources into the account.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-graft agency added that both men were invited, interrogated, and they volunteered statements under caution.<\/p>\n<p>The vendors reportedly admitted receiving a combined total of $2.38 million in USDT from the syndicates.<\/p>\n<p>They also disclosed the wallet addresses used by the group for the transfer of the digital currencies.<\/p>\n<p>Following the EFCC\u2019s application, the court granted the order, declaring the digital assets as permanently forfeited to the federal government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EFCC linked over N2.2bn to Nigerian firm used by foreign cybercrime ring.
