{"id":361412,"date":"2025-07-27T12:26:29","date_gmt":"2025-07-27T11:26:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=361412"},"modified":"2025-07-27T12:26:29","modified_gmt":"2025-07-27T11:26:29","slug":"peoples-interaction-with-chatgpt-could-be-used-in-court-against-them-ceo-sam-altman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/07\/27\/peoples-interaction-with-chatgpt-could-be-used-in-court-against-them-ceo-sam-altman\/","title":{"rendered":"People&#8217;s interaction with ChatGPT could be used in court against them \u2013 CEO Sam Altman"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The company noted that there are legal pitfalls that people who turn to ChatGPT for guidance and emotional support may fall into without knowing<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/02\/18\/elon-musk-owned-xai-to-release-latest-chatbot-grok-3-tagged-smartest-ai-on-earth\/\">ChatGPT<\/a> users who feed their personal information to the Artificial Intelligence chatbot could be unknowingly compromising their own privacy and safety, OpenAI has said.<\/p>\n<p>The company noted that there are legal pitfalls that people who turn to ChatGPT for guidance and emotional support may fall into without knowing.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made this known while speaking on a recent episode of This Past Weekend with Theo Von.<\/p>\n<p>Altman raised concerns about the lack of legal safeguards around AI interactions, especially as more users share personal and somewhat confidential details of their lives with the AI chatbot.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that while professionals like therapists and lawyers are bound by an oath of secrecy and can&#8217;t reveal what a client shares with them to a third party, ChatGPT does not provide that kind of social and legal protection<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople talk about the most personal sh** in their lives to ChatGPT,\u201d Altman said. \u201cPeople use it \u2014 young people especially \u2014 as a therapist, a life coach; having these relationship problems and [asking] \u2018what should I do?\u2019 And right now, if you talk to a therapist or a lawyer or a doctor about those problems, there\u2019s legal privilege for it\u2026 And we haven\u2019t figured that out yet for when you talk to ChatGPT.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Altman underscored the danger this poses, particularly in legal situations. Without established privacy laws for AI interactions, companies like OpenAI could be compelled to hand over user conversations during lawsuits or investigations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s very screwed up,\u201d Altman said. \u201cI think we should have the same concept of privacy for your conversations with AI that we do with a therapist or whatever \u2014 and no one had to think about that even a year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the courtroom and legal framework, the lack of clear privacy protections is already influencing the way people use AI as more people restrict their use to basic enquiries on general subjects.<\/p>\n<p>Podcast host Theo Von admitted to Altman that he doesn\u2019t use ChatGPT much because of privacy concerns.
