{"id":361503,"date":"2025-07-29T08:57:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T07:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=361503"},"modified":"2025-07-29T08:57:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T07:57:10","slug":"ex-sgf-babachir-lawal-backs-kwankwasos-claim-says-tinubu-marginalising-the-north","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/07\/29\/ex-sgf-babachir-lawal-backs-kwankwasos-claim-says-tinubu-marginalising-the-north\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-SGF Babachir Lawal backs Kwankwaso&#8217;s claim, says Tinubu marginalising the north"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Lawal said Kwankwaso\u2019s engineering background made him spot lack of physical development easily across northern Nigeria.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>He alleged Tinubu\u2019s government is deliberately undoing progress inherited in the region\u2019s infrastructure.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has supported Rabiu Kwankwaso\u2019s claims that President Bola Tinubu is marginalising the north in infrastructure development.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Sunday Politics, a current affairs programme on Trust TV, Lawal said there is no tangible federal project in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Nigerian that has anything to do with the north will know that no infrastructure work is going on at any level,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo projects are going on \u2014 at least they are not visible to the eye. Maybe in their imagination, maybe in the spirit \u2014 but we don\u2019t see it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t see any construction work. We don\u2019t see any infrastructure going on. No federal government project whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawal said Kwankwaso\u2019s assertion was accurate, noting that as engineers, they both view physical development differently from others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKwankwaso, remember, is an engineer too \u2014 so he, like me, like David Umahi who\u2019s an engineer too, the way we see things \u2014 physical things \u2014 the way we see them differently,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, Kwankwaso knows what he\u2019s talking about. And it doesn\u2019t need to be Kwankwaso to say what he said. Every sensible, honest Nigerian will know that the north is being marginalised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He alleged that the federal government appears intent on reversing the progress recorded in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the sense we get as northerners is that if this government can destroy what they inherited, they\u2019ll willingly do it. That\u2019s the sense we have from this government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lawal questioned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)\u2019s electoral chances in the north, arguing that the party has lost its appeal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, look at it this way \u2014 which elected official, a northerner, will go into the campaign on the platform of the APC in this coming election?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody. Except, ab initio, you have no plan to win the election. Unless they join ADC, they will not win \u2014 simply because they belong to the destructive party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He accused the Tinubu administration of working against the interest of the north.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything that this government does is designed to destroy the north,\u201d Lawal claimed.<\/p>\n<p>His comments come after Kwankwaso accused the Tinubu government of concentrating development in one region to the detriment of others.<\/p>\n<p>But the minister of works, David Umahi, dismissed the allegation, describing it as \u201cmisleading and unfair to the president\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Umahi said 52 per cent of Tinubu\u2019s major road projects lie within the north, including a 756-kilometre section of the Sokoto\u2013Badagry superhighway.<\/p>\n<p>Also defending the government, presidential media aide, Sunday Dare, said over 40 key projects are ongoing or sustained across northern states.<\/p>\n<p>He said the accusations are politically motivated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lawal said Kwankwaso\u2019s engineering background made him spot lack of physical development easily across northern Nigeria.
