{"id":362414,"date":"2025-08-14T14:38:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T13:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=362414"},"modified":"2025-08-14T14:38:00","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T13:38:00","slug":"third-mainland-bridge-rehabilitation-to-cost-n3-6trn-dave-umahi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/08\/14\/third-mainland-bridge-rehabilitation-to-cost-n3-6trn-dave-umahi\/","title":{"rendered":"Third Mainland Bridge rehabilitation to cost N3.6trn \u2014 Dave Umahi"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Works Minister David Umahi revealed Third Mainland Bridge rehabilitation costs \u20a63.8 trillion while new construction would cost \u20a63.6 trillion<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\"><strong>Severe deterioration from illegal sand mining, erosion and corrosion threatens Nigeria&#8217;s busiest bridge serving Lagos&#8217;s 20 million residents<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has stated that the structural rehabilitation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/27\/breaking-lagos-reopens-third-mainland-bridge\/\">Third Mainland Bridge<\/a> in Lagos State will cost approximately \u20a63.6 trillion, citing extensive underwater damage to the country&#8217;s busiest bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Umahi told journalists after Wednesday&#8217;s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja that recent assessments revealed severe deterioration in the bridge&#8217;s piles and piers, which was primarily caused by illegal sand mining, erosion, and corrosion.<\/p>\n<p>He added that rehabilitation works are now estimated at \u20a63.8 trillion, while constructing an entirely new bridge would cost slightly less, about \u20a63.6 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have approval for at least seven specialist contractors to carry out detailed investigations, designs, and bids for both rehabilitation and new construction under an EPC+F [Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Financing] arrangement,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the findings mirror earlier studies on the Carter Bridge, also in Lagos, which was declared beyond repair by contractor Julius Berger and recommended for full replacement at an estimated \u20a6359 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Under the FEC approvals, the government will advertise public-private partnership (PPP) bids for the projects and hold funding talks with international lenders, including Deutsche Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe underwater problems are compounded by decades of neglect and human activities that have undermined the bridge\u2019s foundations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot delay. Whether we rehabilitate or rebuild, the resources and engineering expertise required will be enormous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Umahi also announced FEC approval for emergency interventions on other damaged bridges nationwide, including the Jalingo Bridge in Taraba State, Ido Bridge (damaged by fire), Keffi Flyover in Nasarawa State, Mokwa Bridge in Niger State, a bridge on the Abuja\u2013Kogi route, bridges on the Lagos\u2013Ibadan corridor hit by vehicles, the Jebba Bridge in Kwara State, and the Itokin\u2013Ikorodu Bridge in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese emergency works will be documented and forwarded to the President for approval through the Ministry of Finance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Inaugurated in 1990, the Third Mainland Bridge is Nigeria\u2019s longest bridge and a critical transport link for Lagos\u2019 estimated 20 million residents.<\/p>\n<p>It has undergone periodic maintenance, but Umahi said recent inspections exposed far more extensive substructure damage than
