{"id":362601,"date":"2025-08-16T17:27:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T16:27:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=362601"},"modified":"2025-08-16T17:27:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T16:27:17","slug":"apc-candidate-stormed-polling-units-with-thugs-police-to-beat-voters-soludo-alleges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2025\/08\/16\/apc-candidate-stormed-polling-units-with-thugs-police-to-beat-voters-soludo-alleges\/","title":{"rendered":"APC candidate stormed polling units with thugs, police to beat voters \u2014 Soludo alleges"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Soludo accused APC candidate of allegedly moving with thugs and police to attack voters and disrupt the bye-election process.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>The governor stressed his commissioner cried in pain after being assaulted by suspected political thugs during the senatorial poll.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, has alleged that his commissioner for environment, Felix Odimegwu, was assaulted during Saturday\u2019s senatorial bye-election.<\/p>\n<p>Soludo made the claim shortly after casting his vote at polling unit 002, Ofiyi Square, Isuofia ward, in Aguata Local Government Area.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had received a report from the field that the incident took place at Ezinifite, in Nnewi South Local Government Area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust in the last few minutes, I got a terrible report from Nnewi South,\u201d the governor was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>He alleged that political opponents resorted to violence out of desperation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe news is not palatable but predictable because when you see you are losing, you begin to unleash violence to disrupt the electoral process,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, Odimegwu was left in pain after being beaten by thugs allegedly escorted by police officers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy commissioner was in pains and crying that the APC governorship candidate in Anambra took truckload of police and thugs and was going from one polling unit to another beating up people, including the commissioner,\u201d Soludo said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is shocking but not unexpected. That is what you do when you are desperate. I understand they are losing even in his ward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor insisted that voters must be allowed to freely exercise their franchise without intimidation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet the people vote and let their vote count. That is what we are asking. But we are confident that at the end of the day, the people\u2019s will must prevail,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Soludo, however, commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for its conduct of the exercise across the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad that so far, the process has been seamless,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom reports I have gotten from around the state \u2013 Anambra South and Onitsha \u2013 it has been relatively peaceful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m impressed that people came out to exercise their civic duties of voting for candidates of their choice.
